Timing is very important when taking Synthroid and Metformin. I had one doctor that told me to take them together and my TSH levels never lowered and remained too high for my body. I went to a new doctor and her advice has truly helped with my TSH level and I actually take a lower dose now of Synthroid.
My new endocrinologist said to take Synthroid first thing in the morning before I eat anything even coffee. I take it when I hit the snooze buttom and make sure that I don't eat anything for the next hour. Also, she said to take my Metformin at night with dinner and especially not within four hours of taking Synthroid. She said not to take any supplements, calcium tablets or vitamins within four hours of taking Synthroid in the morning.
Before changing to this routine, my TSH level was about 4.0 and I was taking 88 mcg of Synthroid. My level went down to .31 so she lowered my dose of Synthroid to 75 mcg. My level went down even lower to .11 so she has lowered my dose to 50 mcg which I will be starting tomorrow.
If you begin to have insomnia, unusual sweating, headaches and heat intolerance, then the Synthroid is working overtime and you may need to have your dose lowered.
I would take my Synthroid (125) around 7:30 go to work and eat breakfast around 8:30-9:00. Knowing the information you told me. I'll wait until lunch and dinner to take my Metformin. I also take BC that raises my synthroid, so anything that brings that level down will help!
If you take the thyroid on an empty stomach it will be completely absorbed within 1 hour so you are fine and dandy to take the metformin with breakfast. It is more important to space out the metformin than it is to wait 4 hours... The 4 hour waiting is to empty out your stomach so you can take *thyroid*.... the metformin should always be taken with food.

Berrykix, I understand the trouble with timing the different meds. But it is important. Don't mess with the empty stomach for thyroid. For Metformin, have you tried the Extended Release tabs (if your dr. allows those)? For me they were a lifesaver because I could not tolerate the ones you take 2-3 times a day. I still have to watch it, but take it after dinner each night, just one time with food in the belly. Also, I don't eat anything after I swallow the Met, to minimize the potential stomach trouble in the morning.
