I have TMJ also and my mom taught me a way to correct it. You open you jaw and put your finger in the hinge part. then press down. It corrects mine everytime. It will be sore for a day then feel normal again. I hope that helps you. Take care.
I've got tmj. Also have one of the night guards, although I clench so bad in the night that I'm wearing grooves in it. I have several badly broken teeth due to grinding, and my jaw is so misaligned that the dentist is in disbelief every time I visit. I get cavities caused by my grinding (not neglect), and have chronic headaches from the clenching.
It's horrid!
Supposed to sleep on my back for the tmj, but due to a bad back, I'm supposed to sleep on my side, but sleeping on my side is bad for the tmj!
Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but what does TMJ stand for?
Cause I also wear a mouthguard at night time due to clenching which gives me headaches and neck problems, but I wasn't ever told that it had a name! My dentist just called me a clencher lol. So does this mean the same as TMJ? Or am I just a clencher?
I got this from the TMJ Association's website - but it gives you the basics.
The TMJ:
"TMJ" stands for temporomandibular joint, or the jaw joint. The TMJs are the small joints in front of each ear that attach the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. They allow you to perform such functions as opening and closing your mouth, chewing, speaking, swallowing, etc.
Causes:
Medical research has not yet defined all the causes of the various TMJ diseases/disorders. Some patients report having TMJ symptoms following dental procedures, the insertion of a breathing tube prior to surgery, trauma, or oral habits such as clenching or grinding the teeth. Conditions that occur in other joints in the body, such as arthritis, can also precipitate or aggravate TMJ pain and dysfunction.
Symptoms:
TMJ patients experience one or more of the following:
• facial pain
• pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissues, including
the ear
• jaw locking open or closed
• limited opening or inability to open the mouth
comfortably
• headaches
• bite that feels uncomfortable, "off", or as if it is
continually changing
• neck, shoulder and back pain
• swelling on the side of the face
I have it also. My dentist made a retainer for me to wear all day. Mine was so bad that I popped my jaw and it stay openned until I massaged it so I could close it. Talk about pain. That was 4 years ago. Now I can chew gum but then next day my jaw is hurting.
