i've been on met (2000mg per day) for four years -- it definitely makes me "feel" better ... but.... ah..... the glorious frantic trips to the bathroom! until you have experienced it, you just can't imagine! luckily, now these trips are not as frequent as they were when i was working through getting adjusted to the medication.
anyway, sometimes all the trips to the bathroom get the skin "back there" very sore and irritated -- i thought i would share the great solution i discovered.... witch hazel.
if you have irritation, make a pad of folded toilet paper, drench the pad with witch hazel and hold it against the irritated skin or tuck it, if possible. the witch hazel is cooling and soothing and provides amazing relief. it will not dry out the skin and it really makes you feel much better. reapply as frequently as needed.
having witch hazel on hand has definetly been a life saver while using met.
just thought i'd share!
I haven't started met yet, but probably will next month. Question: how bad are the frequent bathroom trips??? I work in sales- is this going to be a major problem??? I so fear standing with a customer, and then oops- gotta run! How will I possibly be able to manage???

beejcee, thanks for the great advice! I'll keep it in mind. I'm on met 1500 daily and I'm changing the times I take it so I've gotten some of those fabulous symptoms back.
hydho, any person's reaction to a medication is highly individualized but it is common to have urgent bowel movements with met. Luckily these side effects usually subside with time. I restarted met (after a year or so hiatus) a few months ago and it sucked. Then it stopped. Now I'm changing the times I'm taking it and, apparently, my body disagrees, but you deal with it. My suggestion is, untill you know how it'll affect you, split your doses in the best way to fit your schedule (for example, take them when you get home from work so you have the rest of the night to deal with it). My only other advice is eat a lot of fibre: I was living on popcorn!
You have to weigh the pros vs the cons in taking any medication. What are the benefits to you vs what do the side effects cost you?
Good luck!
- Jess
