I hope this isn't too off-topic, but I knew that once they got the smokers - they'll go after other 'unhealthy lifestyle choices' i.e. the overweight.
I won't be surprised when they start requesting our Albertson's (or Safeway..etc) Card reports to track what we buy.. or copies of our debit/cc transactions to see where we eat.
I know how I sound.. very '1984' right?? I hope I'm wrong.

OMG reading these posts makes me so grateful to be in the UK now, not having to worry about getting treament. i just sign up to a docs and boom.. i get an appoinment and my meds... i read in another thread that vaniqa cream is like $40 or something (even though i found that waste of time) but i wouldnt know what to do if i had to pay for health care. Im also in the same weight catagory as you and your friend and to be denied a basic healthcare would not be helping me in any shape what-so-ever

I was asked my weight/height when I joined up with Anthem (VA) that's something they didn't do with Horizon when I lived in New Jersey. I know I'm overweight, so I wonder how much extra I'm paying for that, I know I'm paying extra for having pcos!
People have mentioned working at starbucks which is a good idea, I belive any goverment job would also offer great benefits.
You may also want to look into working at a hospital, maybe as a unit secretary - which is mainly answering phones and putting files together. There are a bunch of other types of jobs there, usually they're listed on line, or you can go down there and they're posted on boards near Human Resources. Hospitals offer really great benefits. My fiance is a heart tranplant recipient, he took a job at the hospital purely for their health benefits, the pays pretty terrible to be honest but insurance would cost him over $800 per month but thanks to the health benefits through his job, he only pays about $25 a month (including dental!) Also, if he sees a doctor or has a procedure done in the hospital he works at, there's no co-pay. I'm trying to get a job there myself!
Good luck.

Unless you take a high deductible, individual coverage will be in that range...
Yep, my deductable is $2,500. Its silly, I'm paying all this money on health insurance every month but I'm putting off getting bloodwork done because I know I can't afford the lab bill that I'll be responsible for.

Unfortunately, private insurance companies can and do deny you just because the grass is green. I got denied in 3 states by being honest & putting PCOS on the app, even though I was thin and no meds. We finally got insurance by DH being a teacher's assistant. His total takehome pay for 40 hours a week was $700 a month, but we could get insurance again. We couldn't afford COBRA, when you're unemployed, $800 a month is a lot!
Hospitals in my area only hire unit secretaries with billing or medical type experience, but housekeeping ("janitor") often hires and they get the same benefits as the surgeons. Most hospitals the insurance takes effect after 30 days employment or so. Actually, that's true for most govt jobs also, except maybe the federal govt. What about the post office for you?

When we had individual insurance, they tried to charge us more than we were quoted, because DH was overweight according to their charts. The thing is - he isn't really overweight. He works out a lot and has a lot of muscle mass (him - not me! LOL). I think insurance companies need to base their decisions on a person's total health picture, not just a few statistics given over the phone. JMO, I know that's not cost-effective from their perspective.
I've heard the same things about Starbucks' benefits - even for PTers. Of course, if you burn yourself, you might really need the insurance...LOL! In any case, GL and I hope you are able to find a good solution!

I feel ya, I cant even get life insurance for myself, I am morbidly obese, at 5' 4" and 321 lbs. I was told that no coverage is availble to me. I even told them money is not a problem. I was completely denied. Was told I was to much of a risk and good luck with my search, but If I were to lose 150 lbs please call us back and we will give you another quote.
I got denied in three states by every private insurance company in the state, just for putting PCOS on the app--being honest did not pay. I was on NO meds and was actually thin at the time. "Too much money" for Medicaid--ha, yeah, my $0 salary I lost was really a lot. We had a choice between keeping COBRA or keeping our car. The insurance won out. Finally, DH got a $700/mo (yes, seven hundred net for a whole month) job thorugh the state and we got "real" insurance again.
Try to not let it lapse...then they can deny you for YEARS to pay claims, even if you get group insurance later.
