My Mood: Points: 9,778.48 Bank: 11,842.09 Total Points: 21,620.57 | Too much water? Water Retention? I always have a "baby belly" I call it, but lately it's been really bad. So bad I can't wear most of my clothes. I haven't measured it b/c I'm scared.
I'm wondering if I'm retaining water? I drink 72 oz a day - that's the water intake I track (more including dinner & before bedtime).
I've been trying to mix in some gatorade hoping the sodium will act as a natural diuretic. Not having much luck....
Any suggestions?

I retain water even though I don't consume much water. It seems to be one of those things.

Your body retains water when it isn't hydrated enough. So, the more water you drink, the less you will retain.

I can't win!
Maybe I'll just go buy bigger clothes. Too bad I can't cry that water out!
So I probably drink close to 12-15 cups (8 oz as a cup) - I should drink more??

My Mood: Points: 6,578.88 Bank: 36,937.83 Total Points: 43,516.71 | The Mayo Clinic has an article here that outlines recommended fluid intake. At the very least, one should drink 64 ounces of water per day. However, if you work out, spend a lot of time outdoors in the heat, etc. you may require more water to stay hydrated. Basically, they say that you should drink enough water so that you rarely feel thirsty. So, there may be a reason that you feel the need to drink as much water as you do (like high sodium intake - sodium is hidden in a lot of things, not just salty foods).
As for harming yourself by drinking too much water, it can happen, but it takes A LOT of water to reduce the sodium in your body to dangerous levels. I drink a lot of water, so I've researched this subject quite a bit in the last year.

Thanks! | OliviaLeigh have you even been tested for Type II Diabetes or had your blood sugar tested. One of the first signs of elevated blood sugar or type II diabetes is polydipsia which is basically drinking alot of fluids because you are feeling really thirsty. The others are polyuria (excessive urination usually from the polydipsia) and polyphagia (increased appetite) Type II Diabetes results from Insulin Resistance which is very common in women with PCOS.
It could also be because of the sodium intake like the other ladies are saying but i just thought i'd throw it out there.

If you're really worried, see your doc. You might need something like Lasix. My mom had horrible water retention for years. Within a few weeks of taking Lasix she dropped a dozen or more pounds and lost the "baby belly" look.

cmbrown, 20 lbs water weight lost during a long-awaited menstruation...whoaaa! That is some serious water weight.
olivia, I second what mlover said about seeing a doctor. If there is a problem that can be alleviated, they can help discover what it is/how to treat it. It is better than guessing. Just make sure you document when this developed, any changes in eating/drinking/activity habits, and let them know it's impacting your life (such as you can't wear your reg. clothes). Good luck!

Have you stopped/added any medications lately? |
