I am really worried that my weight is stopping me getting PG. I have just come back a doctor's appointment (to get a repeat metformin prescription) and she told me that because i was underweight I was jeopordising my chances of getting PG. SHe told me to gain at least 10 pounds. I know some cysters have the opposite problem with their weight so I don't want to upset anyone here but putting on weight is just not something I can do... I have tried and tried and it doesn't make any difference no matter what I eat. I so want to get PG and this has really upset me.

I'm sorry but that is a bunch of bull. Doctors have told me for the past ten years that all I need to do is gain 10-15 pounds and I would get pregnant. They do not know what they are talking about! It took me a year to gain ten pounds and there has been no difference at all in my PCOS. Still no AF without Prometrium and no O. As far as I've read, when women are underweight their anovulation is attributed to hypothalmic amonorrhea like from excessive exercise or an eating disorder. These women do not necessarily have PCOS. My twin sister has not gained the weight and she just ovulated on her own last month! So, I really think if we are at healthy weights for us that is what matters. I personally think that doctors saying that are just copping out on really trying to improve our health.
Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for your replies... I know my BMI is low (17) but I eat quite a high fat and high calorie diet, even going so far as to have cream on my cereal. This has really thrown me and I wish I could gain the weight.

I am fairly underwt and have been all my life but am healthy otherwise (other than PCOS). I am 5'4" and weigh 105 lbs. I have gotten pregnant twice with the help of meds (clomid, metformin, injects). I miscarried one and I now have an 11 month old daughter. My dr never mentioned anything about gaining wt other than when I was pregnant.
Just keep well and eat healthy. As for what little flower said, she's right that some drs can say just about anything to give you an answer. Hang in there.
My dr thought i wasn't o'ing due to the pcos and the fact that i (was/am) very thin and used to be bullied at school, and told to eat by my colegues at work, and always asked if i had an eating disorder. Now i am 26 wks , 6 days pg, even although i didn't put on any weight before i got pg. Now everyone says i look" healthy" now and being pg suits me as i have put on a little weight, but mostly on my tummy (obviously). It is true that if you are seriously underweight it can effect your fertility over a period of time. But as long as you eat a well balanced healthy diet and take prenatal vitimins, sometimes it just takes time to work things out. I tried putting on weight when i was ttc and nothing worked, i tried eating more at meals, drinking meal replacment drinks with meals but it just made me feel like eating was a chore, and made me feel sick. Good luck

It has been a while since I posted on this board. I was just in to see my gyn the other day. I am 5'8'' 123 lbs. I take met 500 mg twice a day. I O every cycle, but my cycles range from 33-42 days long (over the last year) and lately more toward the 40 day mark. My doc told me that I was underweight and that even though I do have PCOS, it is likely that my low body fat % is delaying O.
The reason for this delay as he explained it is that estrogen is stored in body fat and you need a certain level of estrogen in order to produce enough FSH and LH for O. If you have a very low body fat %, than is takes a while for your body to meet that estrogen threshold.
BTW, the % of body fat normally required for O is about 20%.
Clearly, there are very thin, guant women who seem to get pg without a problem, but my thought on this is that when you have some medical problems already, other factors can make things worse and just plain out of whack.

That is just not true. I used to believe that story and thought that was why I didn't have a regular menstrual cycle. When I got pregnant with my son at 19 I was severely underweight. I had recently been sick so I weiged just under 90lbs at 5'2". After my son was born I immediately went back to my normal 95-98 lbs and have stayed there. Even though my BMI is below normal or at the bottom range of normal, no one would ever say I looked too skinny. I am perfectly healthy and fit my frame just fine. Maybe if I had some boobs they would tack on the extra pounds to make my BMI acceptable to most people!
Hi! My dr has said nothing to me about weight. I am 5'8 and weight 113lbs. They got me to O last month on .50mg Clomid and 1500mg Glugophage. This month I am going on 100mg Clomid and still 1500mg Glugophage. The only thing he told me was that I should eat a little red meat once in awhile. I had not had red meat in 7yrs. Now I try and eat it every other week. Just continue to eat a healthy diet.
Keep a positive out look!!!
Good Luck to you and everyone else!!!!!!!!
