Default Too thin for PCOS

Hi cysters,
I have posted a thread in the Whats on Your MInd board. Basically I came back from my gyno appointment today and she believes I'm 'too thin to have pcos". Was anyone else told this?
Thanks in advance

Yes the pelvic ultrasound report said both ovaries are consistent with polycystic ovaries, ovary size is in the normal range but the right side is twice the size of the left. Both ovaries have multiple cysts, the largest being 9mm. Blood test shows i have not ovulated. No period since June.

Hi Jane, I replied to your other thread as well. The doctor said my ovaries pretty much look like swiss cheese and I weigh 110 pounds. Weigh definitely is not the only indication, I got several opinions when I was diagnosed hoping for something to change and it hasn't. Good luck!

I'm a thin cyster. And I defiantly have PCOS. My doctor told me the opposite. He said thin women get PCOS just like overweight women. He told me it doesn't discriminate. He said each woman with PCOS may have different symptoms. Not everyone is the same.
My current doctor has told me the same thing about any size woman can get PCOS. Maybe try a second opinion.
Good Luck!!!!

Another thin cyster here. I was told it was "unusual" to be thin and have PCOS. With doing more research on my own I've come to realize the statistics are actually closer to what Fee posted, so you can definitely be thin and have PCOS!

Out of the 6 women that I know personally, only 1 is what would be medically termed "obese". I was told that by my old MD. I am currently waiting to see what happens over the next 2 months with AF. I will then have another provera challenge, more bloodwork to confirm bloodwork done by another MD. Endo appt in November. Call BS on your MD and get another one would be my advice

I'm 5 ft tall and I weigh 95 Lbs. If I can have PCOS then there is a possibility that you can have PCOS as well.

I was also told that it was "rare", not impossible. However, my doctor does refuse to put me on Metformin b/c I am thin, so I sort of know what you are going through. Good luck with your dx.

I too am a thin cyster. It took me three docs to finally be diagnosed. I'm 5'4 107 and am TRYING to gain weight before TTC. My BMI is not enough to sustain a pregnancy, even if the miracle happened, I've been told. I understand how frustrating it can be to have a wavering diagnosis.

AnAngel4Adam- did your doc say why he won't put you on met? Mine said he would when I was ready to TTC- a step before clomid. I'm not IR. Now I'm wondering if it's not as safe or effective?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I'm a thin cyster too. My story started last year. I basically self diagnosed myself. I have always been thin (5' 3" and 106 pds). I stopped getting my periods about 2 years ago. Around the same time I started experiencing some black coarse hair growth on my chin. I was also starting to break out when I really never did before.

I went to numerous doctors appointments and they kept switching my pill, taking me off and putting me back on the pill and telling me I was "too thin" and that is why I wasn't getting my period. This went on for almost a year. I wasn't satisfied with the answeres I was receiving- so I decided to do some research on the web. I was researching my symptoms (sudden hair growth and a little acne onset at the age of 28!). I told my doctors about PCOS and of course they told me "You are much too thin to have that and your minimal hair growth and acne dont' coincide with it either). I decided (with the help of some other cysters) to go ahead and make an appointment to see an endocronologist. I'm so happy I did.

I love my endo - she is so nice and she is very knowledgeable in PCOS (its what she specializes in). At my appointment we went through everything - all my symptoms and why I thought it was necessary to be seen by a specialist. I told her my whole story. Prior to seeing her I was plucking the hair on my chin (which I am now getting laser for and am very happy with it - I've had 3 sessions so far and it is definitely working) - but for my appointment I had let it grow out (just a little bit) so she could see them. She gave me a physical exam and then we went into the sonography room. A sonographer who also specializes in PCOS and is thin herself gave me an internal ultrasound. And BAM - just like I expected - I had the "classic" sting of pearl cysts on my left ovary. She said without a doubt I had the syndrome. I started to cry - I felt like I doomed for a lifetime of always feeling ugly/unhealthy and infertility. They both sat my down and explained to me that each and every one of us are in control of our health to some degree. They told me to follow a healthy lifestyle and together we would find the minimal amount of medications that would work for me. The sonographer who also has PCOS was an older woman (maybe late 50's) and she said she foung otu when she was 30. She was able to concieve 3 healthy children and she said she kept her PCOS under control using the same tactics they were instructing me to do.

I was put on the original birth control I was put on at age 20 - which is ortho-tri-cyclen. I have heard that some cysters don't do good on it but it has always been what has worked for me. I requested to be put back on that and my doctor said "You know your body better than anyone - we'll put you on that and revisit in a few months". I was EXTREMELY concerned about the hair growth and the breakouts I was suddenly experiencing so she also put me on a 100mg of spiro/daily and I'm so happy to report (KNOCK ON WOOD).....I'm doing really good. I have not experienced anymore breakouts and the hair growth has dramitically decreased. As I said - I had laser for the hair that was previously there (once hair follicles are stimulated - they will always grow unless you have electrolysis or laser). I also saw a nutrionist (at my endo's request) and while I haven't been tested for IR yet - I follow the IR diet and I have to say - I feel so much better than I did a year ago.

Please don't feel doomed. There are ways to conrol the symptoms and carry on with your life. If you have any other questions - please don't hesitate to ask.

Just like all the others I am also a "thin" cyster. Actually my weight is just right. My ob/gyn told me that I am lucky that I don't display any other symptoms of PCOS besides the "string of pearls" on my ovaries and irregular/no ovulation/periods.

I'm a thin cyster and I have it without a shadow of a doubt! My ovaries look like a string of pearls! I've gained some weight over the past two years but not enough to really matter all that much. Just remember that PCOS is a "syndrome"... not everyone has the same symptoms

As a new member,I can certainly relate to this thread the most b/c I too am a thin cyster!! I am much like Shaima with my PCOS symptoms (no or irregular periods, no ovulation, cysts on ovaries). I also seemed to be a puzzled case for my doctors b/c I was not diabetic, not overweight and did not have any of the other symptoms (which I am very blessed). However, after hearing all the posts on this thread I don't feel to be as much of a rarity in this disease. As mentioned before it seems this disease has no prejudice and can come on those that are the most healthy. I thought i was doing well by being active and athletic through my teenage and adulthood to avoid diseases, nevertheless this shows how much more there is to find out about this syndrome. Thanks for the posts as I do not feel alone!!
