Question Topamax - Anyone taking???

My Dr. put me on this today, since I was on another drug for migraine prevention. He said this one is good for that as well and the added side effect of weight loss. Would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with Topamax.
Thanks in advance.

I endorse Topamax.

I've lost some weight with it. Watch out for the way soda tastes, though. Do a search for topamax, I've posted quite a few times on it before.

I was on Topamax, but didn't lose weight. However, there are several other reasons that could be why I didn't lose. Good luck to you. And do beware of the taste of carbonated drinks.

I was also on Topamax, and did lose a good deal of weight. It didn't so much suppress my appetite as make things taste funny and not worth eating. I agree whole heartedly with the recommendation to watch out for carbonated beverages.

I had an awful time with topamax, I have been taking it for 5 months and losing my hair really badly. I just stopped taking the medication last week. I'd rather keep my hair and have headaches, than have no hair left at all.

I've been taking it for about a month & haven't noticed much of a change in my migraines. I have an appt to see my Dr. in 2 weeks, so I'm going to give it 'til at least then. I have to take it at bedtime 'cause I only have about 15 minutes of consciousness after I pop the pill in my mouth. Hope you have better results!!

I have been taking it for about 2 months now at 200mg. Not for headaches but actually for weight loss. I have lost weight on it but I dont really think the topamax has much to do with it. Yes, the carbonated drinks taste awful which is a good thing if you are hooked on them cause that will help you get off of them. I hear the greater the dose the bigger the weight loss or the more likely you are to lose weight with it and maybe the same with the headaches. Maybe your dosage should be increased-momo. What dosage are you at? I am giving a pt 600mg right now for her headaches. I have heard some people say that they had problems with short term memory loss but I havent so watch out for that.

Topamax earned the nickname "dopamax" for a reason. Many people (though I'm sure it's still just a small portion of those who've taken topamax) experience a wide range of "cognitive effects". Many times these show up as either problems with short term memory or a very obvious difficulty with vocabulary (for me, it was like I could see a word in my head, but I couldn't even begin to pronounce it - that and it made me flat out stupid). It does work for many though, so please don't let my experience talk you out of it (I must admit I didn't have a migraine at all in the months that I took it). Just have a good friend or two help watch you for changes in things like memory and how you talk. Good luck with it.
