so, i found out today that i have eczema. within the past few days a mild dry patch of skin on my chin/jaw area has turned into a red, rough, itchy mess. i went to the dermatologist, and he wants me to put hydrocortisone cream on it, BUT i am really scared to do so, because one of the side effects listed for hydrocortisone is increased hair growth i have only just recently begun to visibly overcome my hair growth from PCOS. i cannot bear to think of it getting worse.
have any of you experienced increased hair growth after applying hydrocortisone to your skin?
Yes, my dum arse electrolysist actually used that after her treatment. I began to notice that things were getting worse after starting to see her but I didn't know why until I asked her one day what was in the cream and freaked once I found out. Needless to say I don't see her anymore!

wow - that's ridiculous. i'm so glad you asked her what was in the cream!

Yeah I am one of the people who has really sensitive follicles, like my testosterone isn't too high by strict medical standards, but it doesn't matter because everything affects my skin and hair follicles. Basically, anything that has a derviative of a steroid is not good for someone like me who is so sensitive. I should try using some sort of hair reducing cream with soy in it to maybe reverse the process, hehe, but it's probably too late, so I am going to have to start from scratch with my electrolysis treatment.
Lesson learned? Ask what people are putting on your skin from the start!!!! I mean I am not a dermatologist, but I can honestly say that things got worse once she put that cortisone cream on my face!!! Good topic to bring up by the way, because many people may not realize how it is an androgen in a way! Also, sorry I typed dumb, as "dum" how "dum" of me, lol!!!
I was using hydrocortisone cream at one point and also a cream containing a small quantity of betamethasone for an eczema-like skin condition. I did a lot of research into these and found you shouldn't use them for any longer than 3 months max cos they aren't supposed to be used for extended periods of time (I find this out after my GP had been prescribing me the beta cream for 6 years and I'd been using it 3x a day every day!).
It can not only cause hair growth as a side effect, but also prolonged use can cause skin layers to thin out (usually causing more problems in the process). I think that if you have to use it, that's ok (I'm still using the beta cream), but only use it when you really need to.

hm, i've never heard of that before. is it steroidal?
yes it is a topical steroid, and like locagirl said you aren't supposed to use it for prolonged periods of time. I was on it from a baby until I was in my 20's, then dr's tried on a variety of other creams but none worked as well as the betnovate. I was put back on it a few years ago but luckily my excema has calmed down and at the moment it is just affecting the back of my ears. My excema improved when I cut down on dairy products. I have never noticed any hair growth where I have used the cream, but then on me I probably wouldn't notice it anyway ..lol
