When I am talking my full dosage of Gluc (which I have been on and off of several times), I am sooo tired by the end of the day I could fall over. Like, I could go to bed at 7:30, but stay up and can't keep my eyes open past 9:00, and then have to peel myself out of bed at 6:30 a.m.
I am normally a very active, energetic person and this kills my desire to excercise or even do the dinner dishes! Anyone else?
Also, I get headaches often in the afternoon. Do I just need to be super-picky about what I eat in order to avoid this?
I am taking Metformin 2000 mg daily. I first noticed my tiredness about two weeks after starting my Met. I called my doctor and she said that Metformin causes a Vitamin B12 deficiency. I bought some Vitamin B12 and have upped my intake from 500 mcg to 1000 mcg daily.
I'm feeling better and less tired. I posted a link to a study on Vitamin B12 Deficiency here:

WOWZA -- I never knew this. Thanks so much! I will go get B12 TODAY! I am so happy to know there may be an actual solution to this problem. I will let you know if it helps!
I had that problem, also. I didn't know about the B12...hope it helps you, because I remember how incredibly tired I was. Mine went away after 3 or 4 months.

This might be my problem right now. I am just starting week two of met and I am so tried by the end of the day I am ready to drop off. It's only 7:00 here and I'm ready to go to bed.
I might have to look in to the b12. Can I take that with the RX pre-natal that I'm taking?

THANK YOU! I didn't know this either and I have been SO exhausted. I'll ask the dr on Tuesday!
I was told about the b12 as well by my doctor but I was also told that taking it orally will not help. Your body breaks it down before it gets in your system. My dr said that the only way to recieve benefits were to get it through shots. Then again this was my old doc that I no longer see nor do I trust so I'll have to bring it up to my current one on my next visit.
something about getting low blood sugar and being extremely tired if you are still getting insulin spikes due to excess carb consumption. I stay exhausted all the time and have for years. I used to think I was just the most incredibly lazy person in the world. Now, I notice a huge difference if I just make sure I get enough protein. Just a for instance: this morning I decided to have waffles and syrup for breakfast and my body just completely shut down after about an hour. I literally could not hold my eyes open. I had to force down some protein and then I felt better.
I just thought I'd mention this to you because I thought I was getting worse when I started on Metformin and blamed it for my exhaustion but it was really just that Met was increasing my body's reaction to the excess carbs.
Guess since I have that IR Diet book, I should try following it, huh? LOL

If you check out the FAQ thread, there is an article in the B12 section about taking calcium as well, as it helps the absoption of B12.
I had the same problem for my first year on met, uintil I started a good supplement with B12. It made so much difference...my first night on B12, after barely being able to lift my head for months, I cleaned out my walk in pantry! It felt so good to have energy again. Hope that aspect can help you.
I would also try to stay on the met and try not to start and stop it. I know it's tough, but the constant regulating and un-regulating of your hormones is bound to tax your poor body. Try to stick with it..the longer you do, the better chance it has of getting those hormones under control. Good luck, Lauren!

Thanks again! I got the B12 over the weekend and I think it's really helping! I am so excited! Christy -- I know you're right about staying on the meds, I have to MAKE MYSELF take them!!!
I have been a wreck on Met, I get soooo tired by 2pm I struggle to stay awake and concentrate at work. It is effecting my home life as well because I am so tired by the time I get home, I have no patience and end up agruing with my partner etc, it is horrible. I have been taking a womans multi-vitamin but maybe I need to take extra B12 as well.
Thanks for this thread everyone, I thought it was just me!
I went looking for B12 supplements, but the only ones I could find contained super-mega doses of it, like 1000% RDA or 5000% RDA. Is that safe? Is it more than your body can use (what my doctor calls "expensive urine")?
How much do you take, those of you who take B12? I was thinking of taking a B-complex, but the doses are similar, mega mega. I already take a multivitamin, and I'm willing to add extra B vitamins, but I'm not sure about the huge amounts.
I Just wanted to let everyone know about some information I had on B12. There is a sublingual (placed under tongue) B12 pill that is really helping a lot of people. It also contains B6 and Folic Acid and is cherry flavored. They say it is just as effective as getting a B12 shot because it goes directly into your blood stream because it is placed under your tongue. Here is the information if anyone is interested:
Phone Number: 1-800-344-2095
Web Site: Trivita
Price: $24.99 + $5.75 (S&H) for one month supply
I hope it helps. I just ordered mine and I will let everyone know how it works. Thank you. Tammy/JJ.
Oh, wow -- that sounds pretty neat -- and it's safe? I hope so!
I also think working out helps -- as tired as I am if I make myself go i usually feel better in the end. Although I was still DRAGGING myself out of bed this morning after a FULL 8.5 hours of sleep! What is WRONG with me!?!?!
