I have been feeling particularly ick the last couple of months (very tired, depressed, etc) so I went to the doctor this week to talk about 1) my thyroid and 2) depression. I figured that since its been a while since my TSH was tested maybe it was high and that was the cause.
Low and behold my TSH was .041 which actually makes me hyper right now. I have been on the same dose of cytomel (75mg) for about 10 years now and have been reasonably stable. The doctor suggested that we might switch me back to Synthroid, but I would probably feel the difference.
I guess I need some input on why if my TSH is so low, do I have so many hypo symptoms (low energy, dry skin, etc)? And why would I want to go back to a med that is going to normalize my TSH but make me feel even worse?
Any thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance,
Dale Ann

Are your FT3 and FT4 numbers in the middle of the range or higher? If not, the TSH isn't telling the whole story. If your doc didn't run those tests, I recommend you ask him to do so before deciding on switching meds or dosages.
Also, please keep in mind that other things can mimic hypothyroid symptoms. Like ferritin level being low (which everyone associates with iron level, but it really CAN be low even with good iron levels), B12 being low, perimenopause, and menopause (low estradiol levels can feel like hypothyroid), being pregnant, or after having a baby. Did your doc run a full work up on you?
Something else to consider...many people find that their TSH number is higher when tested early in the morning, and at its lowest in the late afternoon.

You can feel hypo while being hyper. Everyone feels it differently. I'd suggest if I were you, lowering the cytomel just a *tad*. You should feel it within a couple of days. What size tablets do you take? Could you try lowering your dose to 60mg instead of 75mg for a couple of weeks and then go back in for another blood draw (and see how you're feeling)?
I felt just as tired when I was hyper as when I was hypo...

I think the TSH is an irrelevant test, and it is best to find a doctor who will treat by symptoms. I've felt great when my TSH was 1.5 and felt very hypo and needed more meds when it was 0.01. I don't even bother with testing anymore and go only by symptoms and body temperature, now that I know my body.
