Default Toys-R-Us Warning!

Hello all! I hope everyone reads this and bumps it up for a few days. I'm putting out my own "consumer alert" about Toys-r-Us (TRU) & Babies-r-Us (BRU).

I went there today to return a defective gift that had been given to me, only to find out that as of Jan. 19th, TRU and BRU will no longer do ANY returns without a receipt. This includes even exchanges! The only way you can return/exchange without a receipt is if you have a gift registry at the store and the item was purchased off of it.

What is the big deal?

1. From now on, any child who receives a present which is defective must either have the actual receipt or gift receipt or they are STUCK with a defective toy.

2. Any child who receives the wrong size clothing will no longer be able to exchange the clothing for the SAME THING in a different size, once again they are stuck with it!

I don't know about all of you, but this does not strike me as good customer service!! I always ask for gift receipts, but I know many people - especially older ones - do not. So, be forewarned, if you give any TRU or BRU gifts, be sure to give a receipt in case the item is defective and if you receive any gifts without receipts, be prepared to fight if you want to exchange it.

By the way, this is not a hoax, I verified it with Lou, one of the managers at the TRU store on Oak Springs Rd, Washington, PA.

I have cross-posted this to all the "Motherhood" categories because we all buy gifts for children. BTW, the item I tried to exchange was clearly new and in the original packaging.

Just updating my warning...Bay Girl found the corporate policy online and posted it and it is NOT changed according to the corporate office. I am going to call the office and find out why my returns weren't honored. However, I have found out that mine is not the only store doing this, so if you shop there be sure to check if the return policy has been changed in that store. Other cysters have had the same problems.

Meanwhile, I am printing the policy and carrying it in my purse!

I spoke to the TRU corporate offices and was informed that the TRU official return policy has not been changed. If you have tried to return merchandise and been denied a return because you do not have a gift receipt or original receipt, you can call the corporate office and file a complaint. You can also take your merchandise back to that store for an exchange or credit.

If the store tries to deny the return-even for an even exchange or store credit-the guest services department says to NOT leave the store and insist that the worker call 1-800-Toys-r-us or 1-800-Baby-r-us and they will settle the matter imediately.

The only way a manager can refuse an exchange is if a person is trying to return an obviously worn and used item for a new one.

TRU also recommends:
1. Bring original packaging if you have it
2. If it is a duplicate item, do not open it (duh!)

Good luck!
