Default Transvaginal Ultrasound

My doctor scheduled one of these for me today. Has anyone had one of these before? Does it hurt? Can they check for ovarian cysts with this test?

No, it usually doesn't hurt. It can be a bit uncomfortable, but they couldn't find my left ovary, and kept trying, that's when there was some discomfort. They can see cysts with these, and sometimes can find more than the normal ultrasound. It all depends on the person. Good luck and lots of hugs~

Thanks for responding. I always worry a little when they want to poke at me with something! It seems weird that they can see your ovaries from that angle. I just hope that the tech performing the test is female. I would feel more uncomfortable with a male!

I had my first one last week.

The most uncomfortable thing was the transabdominal ultrasound they do first when your are busting to pee! Then they let you go to the toilet and you start the transvaginal.

They couldn't see my ovaries through the transvaginal so they moved it around quite a bit. It didn't hurt even for a second.

I didn't have any pain at all with this. They couldn't find my left ovary either. Good to hear I'm not the only one. She did say she was getting a great view of my gall bladder while looking for it though. Good luck. Don't worry, it's really nothing.

Ive had about 30 of them with all my pelvic pain and looking at my follies with using the injectables. I got used to them but in no way do I look fwd to them! They are uncomfy sometimes like the previous poster said when they cant find or get a good look at a part of one of your ovaries and they have to search. Good luck!

Any ideas on how long the procedure usually takes?

I had one yesterday. I was pretty uncomfortable the whole time. The woman doing mine was not the least bit gentle. It takes about 15 min or so....

hi

you'll be fine. It's a bit like having a smear done (pap test).

Thanks ladies for all your answers. It is so nice to have somewhere to go with your questions about all these weird tests that we need. I feel like a lab rat sometimes, and it always helps to know exactly what to expect. Thanks again!

They had the same problem with me when they did the trans-vaginal u/s, couldn't see my ovaries, but they could see all the cysts on them! Interesting!

I had it done a few months ago, it wasn't bad at all. In fact it wasn't nearly as intrusive as a pap, and it only takes a few mintues.

I agree it doesnt hurt it is uncomfortable though someone did mine when i wasn't sexually active though and that hurt like hell every doctor that i've told since that they did that is always shocked and tells me that they should never have done a transvaginal on someone who wasn't sexually active

My PCOS diagnosis came mainly from my U/S. The (female) tech doing the procedure looked at the screen and after 3 seconds, she was like, "There you are, polycystics ovaries."
She managed to see both of them. It was slightly uncomfortable, but I laughed when I saw her putting a condom on the machine...for a moment it seemed kinda weird!
The whole thing was over and done with in about 15 mins.
Nothing to worry about!
