Default treatment

Hi- I have had my diagnosis for about 1 1/2 years, only after having no period for 6 months, then all of a sudden having one for three weeks and becoming anemic. I also have other symptoms. In all of this time my Dr. never mentioned weightloss ( I am overweight) as a possible solution..Is this normal?
PCOS was never really explained at all, nor were any treatments except for glucophage. I have just recently been doing research on PCOS for a paper at school. I was amazed at all of the great info I have found. And I am really happy to have found this site.

Well, that's proof you shouldn't just depend on your doctor for treating this! There is a lot of good information out there. Good for you to do the research. And good luck!

To answer your question, yes it's normal to get misinformation on treating PCOS. I think a lot of it depends on whether or not you have a doctor who's knowledgable about PCOS. A lot of MDs out there are not familiar with PCOS, and also a lot of the PCOS symptoms can be mistaken for other ailments (like hypothyriodism, for example). It took years of having these symptoms and going through several doctors before I finally found one who diagnosed me correctly.

If you aren't happy with your current doctor, keep searching until you find one in your area who knows about PCOS and how to treat it. Although glucophage (metformin) is a medication that's commonly recommended for many of us PCOS'ers, there are lots of other options out there to treat this syndrome. Good luck with your research, but it sounds like you're already on the road towards recovery.

I must agree with Siamlovex2. Either your dr. did not really care on making sure you understood what you have or maybe you were taking more of a hands off approach?

In no way do I mean this as an insult but my mother has a friend who had it for over a year and when she started TTC she called her dr. office 2 make an appt. & the nurse told her she had PCOS which would make that difficult. she was shocked that she doesn't even remember the dr telling her that, but DX her in her file!

I'm glad u did your research (even tho it was for school) LOL!!!! But since it's not cancer or heart disease...you really have to go into the dr's office prepared w/ information & questions. If they can't answer them or have obvious information gaps...you may want to find another specialist so you could get better care.

I wish you all the best! And remember to walk in w/ ur notes & let them know you mean business. Most treatment options I have seen are the same: bcp, hormones to start period, surgery, insulin-resistant drugs, etc.. Keep researching these to see what your dr. is willing to try. Weight loss will MOST DEFINITELY be the best thing you can do for it. (since it was explained to me that fat cells hold testosterone so the more fat you have, the more you are keeping the PCOS cycle going....)

see ya around Cys!
