Default treatments for Non IR pcos

I was wondering what meds work best for someone who is non IR, with PCOS that the doctor told me was prob. caused by "long term birth control use." Apparently no one really knows the true cause of type 2 pcos....

I have a b.m.i. of 18.2 and I am trying to gain weight. I took clomid days 3-9 and I am on cycle day 18 with no ovulation yet.

I have read that people who are non IR and have lean pcos don't respond well to clomid. I posted a similar thread before I knew I wasn't IR. Anyway, if someone out there has the same pcos as I do will you tell me what worked for you.

Thanks so much!

I am non IR. 5'3" and 112 lbs. I eat a healthy diet and maybe that is preventing insulin problems. I do know sugar makes me super crabby. So maybe there is a connection even if it is not clinical. Certinly sugar is not good for anyone.

I took birth control for 8 years which helped all symptoms of PCOS. I am no longer on birth control and therefore no medication for PCOS besides healthy diet and exercise. I just started to try and get pregnant and am waiting for my period or ovulation. My gut tells me the best thing I can do for myself even beyond diet and exercise is STRESS LESS. I think the stress increases androgen production. For me it seems to come from both my adrenals and my ovaries.

I am def. under stress right now. I also feel really fatigued and crappy when I eat sugar. I eat really healthy because we have a garden this year and I know that prob. keeps me thin. I have a tiny mother and two tiny aunts, even my grandmother is little.

I took another opk today and it was also negative, my cervical position hasn't changed and I have almost no cervical fluid. I know that clomid can make you not have any cervical fluid so I am taking robitussin because it is an expectorant and increases mucus production.

I dont think I am able to have periods on my own either, so keep me posted if you start ovulating and having periods on your own.

Thanks for the input

I also am thin with PCOS (don't know if I am IR or not). I tried clomid and it did not work for me. My lining did not thicken well and I did not ovulate. This month I am using Femara, Follistim & a trigger shot then an IUI. I have ovulated once with the Femara and the trigger shot. I think the trigger shot (Orvidel I think) is a must for me to ovulate. Good luck to you!

I'm a thin cyster too. I didn't respond to clomid at all. I also took 2000mg. of Metformin for over 2 years and never had a period! I never do unless I'm on bcp or take prometrium. I am now back on Metformin working up to 1500 mg. and just took one round of femara and still didn't respond. Now I'm waiting for af to show so I can have the HSG test done, then probably moving on to injectible/iui! Hoping something will finally do the trick, because I am not patient!

Hi I am fairly thin I guess 5'4 125 pounds! I have tried femera, and clomid with no succes I never had a dominant follicle! I did with injectables and IuI and have also done an IVF cycle all are still a BFN! But in all fairness I had a huge septum splitting my uterus in two so now that has been resected I am close to starting IVF #2! I am thinking about asking my doctor to put me on metformin for the heck of it! I only have polycystic ovaries, I don't ovulate, and my testosterone is 57 which is in the normal range but anything over 50 is consider high/normal!

From the stickies at the top of the forum, as well as, the research articles forum:

Study: Androgens in Thin Cysters with and without IR

Pcos Treatment - Non-obese Women

Fat distribution affects PCOS metabolism regardless of body weight

Thin Cysters respond better than obese women to treatment with metformin

Lack of consensus on what defines PCOS and "normal" insulin sensitivity

jzeman:

I have never heard of type 2 pcos?? What does that mean?
I am 5'7" 127 lbs and am not IR. I have done 4 rounds of clomid all at 50mg. I ovulated each time although Late. I did get pregnant this last cycle but miscarried at 5 weeks. I really wonder if clomid is worth taking. It definitely dries you up. I also used preseed which is helpful. I really want to try metformin but my doctor keeps saying no.
I have heard that if clomid hasn't worked after 3 rounds it probably isn't the drug for you.
Good Luck!

My husband is a Urologist and is really good friends with my Gyno ( a female doc) which works next door... We are all friends so when we were hanging out after I was diagnosed in August she said it is categorized as "type 2" if you do not have an Insulin resistance and do not fit the standard symptoms of normal PCOS....

How late did you ovulate? I am on cycle day 21 and I had bloodwork this morning done to check my progesterone.. I will prob. not get it back until wed.

I know clomid does thin your uterine lining... so it is esp. vital that you take progerstone if you do conceive. I hope I will ovulate late if anything. This was my first cycle of clomid 50 mg. I haven't had any cm hardly at all even with robitussin?

The whole thing is super frustrating...

Gem2be..

I forgot to mention to you that I also asked to be put on metformin... I read a post that KatCarney linked to me and it was a study showing that metformin helps thin pcos sufferers even without IR. I was told by my doc that she would only try that if three rounds of clomid failed. She said that it could make you loose weight and as small as I am she would be scared I would loose 15 pounds and my hypothalamus would shut down.

We also are using preseed too! Thank God for that because the clomid does dry you up...
