Default Triglycerides off the charts - is it the Spiro?

Hi all,

I just got back some lab results which were way out of range. My triglycerides were on the high end of normal last year when I had them tested (135) but now they've shot up to over 300. This seems really weird since my other labs have stayed pretty consistent. I did read that diuretics can affect triglyceride readings - and I was recently on a pretty high dose of Spiro (175mg). Ive now lowered it to 75/100mg because of the side effects. But that is a worrisome triglyceride reading and I'm not sure whether to freak out over it or not.

Any feedback would be very appreciated :-)

Thanks,
Jenny

I was put on Spiro 3 months ago, and when I was 1 1/2 months in my doc said I needed to get blood work checked to make sure everything was okay. The only things that needed to be checked per my Doc was Sodium, Potasium (sp?) and electrolytes. I'm not sure what triglycerides are...but that's what I had to have checked when I got put on Spiro.

Have you recently changed or started BCPs? They can cause elevated Triglycerides.

I don't think spiro would affect your triglyceride level. Are you taking simvastatin now because they are elevated??

Is anyone on simvastatin? It's the off- brand of Zocor, a cholestoral lowering med. I read that it helps women w/ PCOS as it lowers testosteron also. I would like to learn more about it and get some feedback. The side effcts sounds bad, are the benefits worth it?

Hi. My triglycerides shot up after starting metformin. It was like 159 before met and then 700 four months after starting met. It does run in my family, however my theory is the met works hard at metabolizing carbs and getting rid of them--which unfortunately leaves the fats behind to build up. Not sure if this is really true, but kind of odd how it shot up so quickly. good luck!

I believe if you read the drug facts for Spiro and other diuretics, it says they may raise triglycerides. Mine went up when I took Yaz. When I stopped Yaz, but continued to take Met and Spiro, they came back down.

Mine where over 500 at one time. I can't remember if I was on Spiro at the time. However, the doctor told me it could just be caused by the PCOS and metaballic syndrome. She started me on Met wich actually made them go down quite a bit, but still not normal. I then got pregnant and should probably go back and have them rechecked. Hope you get them figured out.
