Hi Everyone! I'm new to Soul Cysters. I was diagnosed with PCOS in April, and I had group insurance coverage with my employer. The company downsized, and I was let go. I have a new job, but i have to buy my own insurance. I am having a heck of a time getting coverage. I was told by a couple of insurance companies that PCOS is listed on the National Directory Of Rare Diseases (HUH!!!!!!!!), so by state law, they are not required to cover me, and there is no way I qualify for medicaid.....well, they told me if I had a baby I could qualify....now that's just discrimination!
Sorry I ranted, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, what did you do?
Did you go on Cobra when you were let go from your company? If you've had no lapse in coverage, there should be less of a problem getting individual insurance even with a pre-existing condition.

I was offered COBRA at $750 a month, so I had no choice but to lapse my coverage bc unemployment in S.C. sucks and there was no way I could afford that.

Wow. That's expensive. I can understand the problem.
You might want to run a google search to find people who've had lapse of coverage in your state to ask what company they found that overlooked pre-existing conditions.

The lapse of coverage is the loophole the insurance company ill se to not offer coverage. Really sorry that this has happened. I would have to agree with Kat, you need to research how people within your state have been able to handle this. Here we have insurance companies that will cover you, but they make you pay deeply for it, and have lots of fine details that tend to bite you in the back side. Good luck!!!!!!

Do a search on soulcysters on insurance. There have been several threads in the last year with people telling about individual insurance companies that covered them.
Find a good independent insurance agent that understands health insurance. He/She will have detailed information about the different types of policies.
If you work in an industry that has a professional society, check and see if that society offers group insurance. You can pay dues to the society and be eligible to particpate in their group insurance.
Employer paid health insurance is a huge benefit! Most people don't realize what is worth until they lose it. You can always look for another job that offers group insurance.
