Default Trouble swallowing food..

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone was having this problem: I have noticed that shortly after I started taking Metformin that I have been having trouble swallowing food. I have actually choked a few times and it really freaks me out. Dr. plans on doing and ultrasound on my next appointment.

It probably is related to the Met. It never did that to me, but I have taken two other medications in my life that have done that to me, and you're right. It's really scary. It's weird, too, because its like you're moving your tongue for a swallowing motion and your throat muscles are working, just not in sync....

I hope you get it worked out!

Thanks ivetastedflight for your suggestion. I think I may have solved the problem. I was talking to my best friend a few weeks ago and after telling her about the issues i had been having says that I may have acid reflux. I started taking pepcid acid nad with in a couple of weeks the problem slowly started to go away. I also think the uncoated metformin was making it worse as well. I asked the endo to switch me to Glumetza, especially now that I have to take Met twice a day. It had been great so far. Hopefully, it will only continue to get better.

Hey Keishadoc, are you also on YAZ- it's a birth control. I've been taking it as well as spirnolactone and having the same swallowing issue. I'm not taking metformin.
My doc said it may be from an irritated gall bladder. Good luck.

I have it and to this day they can't explain why I'll start choking on my food. I've been on met and off met when it happens. Let me know if you get any answers because even after the xray's they can't figure it out.

i had the same problem when I had really bad acid reflux. when i would swallow (w/out food) it would feel like there was something stuck in my throat that wouldn't go away. i also had really bad pain in esophagus area (like near where an adam's apple would be) and i could never figure it out - i thought it was my thyroid and had it scanned...it wasn't. then i just thought I was crazy!! i've kept it under control by taking Prilosec OTC and avoiding trigger foods like wine, chocolate, fast food, and eating too much at once. that's helped ALOT and my throat feels great now!
