Default Trying Met again

Hi there, I'm new here. I was diagnosed with PCOS 5 yrs ago, but can trace symptoms back to '95 and longer.

Anyway, when I was first diagnosed, the doctor put me on Met. But by the time I got up to 1500mg per day, I was non-functioning. I had developed mood swings so severe that I would stay in a state of rage for hours at a time. They even put me on prozac to control the effects, but it didn't help. They took me off the Met and the mood swings eventually went away. My doc wanted me to try Met again, but only on 500mg per day for long term just to be sure with the same effects.

I was on Topomax for a while, and that definately helped, but I could not handle the side effects (memory loss). So now, my new doc (and Endo) is putting me on 1000 mg Met XR to see if I can tolerate that. I have high hopes, but am understandably a bit leary.

Has anyone else had these kind of side effects with Met? I have scoured the PCOS boards but haven't found references to it. Even the doctors say it is odd. I know that Met XR seems to be more tolerable with less gastric side effects, so I am hoping it will be the same with the mood swings. They were very ugly and I really don't want to put my family (or myself) thru that. But I need something to deal with the PCOS and IR.

Much thanx!

Willow

Well, I certainly had those side effects on birth control pills, I seriously doubted my sanity! I have been on met for three periods. When I wasn't careful what I ate I noticed I started to feel unstable in the same way I did on the pill I assume its the same upheaval of hormones. Now I only eat wholefoods and my head is fine. Maybe you already eat well but if not its something to try.
I really feel for you on this one.

I haven't had any side effects (that I know of) and I'm on 1,000 mg daily. In fact, I've been feeling a little more content and happy. I also started taking a Super B-Complex and Vitex so they may be helping. Maybe you could experiment with these supplements and see if they help you?

I hope you find an answer soon! ((hugs))
