Default trying not to concieve

I just finished taking 200MG of Prometrium for 14 days three days ago and am expecting AF to arrrive any day now. So far I've had a little spotting, but considering I haven't seen AF in over a year, a little spotting is nothing. I've only gotten my period by itself once, and that was way back when I was 15. I'm 19 now, and I have gone through the process of taking BC pills and getting AF reg., then stopping and finding out I had pcos yada yada. I just recently became sexually active and have had unprotected sex once or twice. It's kind of hard rationalizing why not to since I don't ovulate... except I've been wondering lately if the prometrium might cause ovulation at all... and if it did, how would i know? Could this spotting be a sign that I was pregnant? Or am I just being paranoid?

Women with pcos don't necessarily stop ovulating totally, they may ovulate only occasionally, or very infrequently so it is important to use protection if you don't want a baby, and also to practice safe sex and protect yourself from diseases by using a condom.

To be sure you are not pg, you might want to do a home pregnancy test like ClearBlue Easy. It is better to be sure and it will also put your mind at ease.

Then, please use contraception if you don't want to conceive. My sister, whom I'm sure has pcos (never dianosed officially, has all the symptoms, and when they removed her ovaries they were full of cysts) had 2 babies around your age.

Yes, Yes, Please use a condom. Even if you are not ovulating, there is the issue of diseases. It will be hard enoght ttc when the time comes. You don't need to deal with a disease that can affect fertiltiy, or worse cause death. But also remember condoms are not 100% at preventing pregnancy or disease. I know you are young but seriously think about what youa re doing today because it will affect you in the future.

Sorry that was a tad preachy. Just take it as advice from an older cyster.

If I were you I would look into a non hormonal form of birth control if you are in a serious monogomous<sp> relationship. And if you guys are not serious then maybe condoms would be your best option. You may not want babies right now,but you may want them in the future and you need to protect what precious fertility you have. Dieases can wreck havoc on your reproductive system. I will tell you this, when I was younger my period were irregular and I got pregnant even though I hadnt had a period that month. I was two+ months late and found out I was pg!! It was quite a shock because I thought you couldnt get pg w/o a period. So it is very possible so be careful! Also,if you find yourself pg now please think about your options very carefully. I wish I would have when I found myself in the very same situation. Please email or pm me if you need to talk. Good Luck and I hope in your case you get a Big Fat Negative. Take care and God Bless.

I know that you all say that pcos women ovulate sometimes, but I literally NEVER get my period while not on meds. Is there any test to find out if I ovulate ever ... or not?

There is test but they wouldnt be very accurate since Pcos women tend to have high LH level anyway. It might always show positive result for ovulation if you were to do the ovulation predictor tests. You might look into one of those ovulation microscopes-you lick the slide and look for a ferning patter in the dry saliva. You dont notice this pattern until a couple days before ovulation but sperm can live up to five days. So if you have sex 4-5 days before ovulation but you dont notice a ferning pattern until 2 days after you had sex then you can still get pg. Do you follow me?? Really honestly some method of birth control is the only way to guarantee that you are not going to get pg and even then it's not at a hundred percent. If you dont want to get pg,then dont take a chance. Use protection every time regardless if you think you are ovulating or not because you never know.

Even if you did tests to see if you are ovulating, it doesn't mean you won't ovulate next week or in 6 months from now. A woman of reproductive age who still has her ovaries and has not had her tubes tied has to always assume that pg is a possibility if she doesn't want to conceive. There are many methods of birth control out there to prevent pg, but only condoms can give you some protection from diseases. Even if your partner claims to be disease free, he can be infected without knowing and it is better to not take any chances.

PLEASE PLEASE use condoms! Hormonal bcp's may not be the best bet for your PCOS right now AND like Nunu said..ANY woman of childbearing age who has ovaries CAN ovulate at any time.

I strongly recommend you using condoms because they can prevent STDs as well a pg, while other methods merely prevent pg.

Not to sound rude (because I was 19 just a few years ago and I remember it well), but there is no excuse not to use SOME form of birth control. There are plenty that are non-hormonal such as condoms, diaphragm, VSF (vaginal contraceptive film), and contraceptive foams and jellies.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND CONDONS DUE TO THEIR ABILITY TO DECREASE A WOMANS RISK OF STD'S!!!

Here are some statistics on STDs....

One in five people in the United States has an STD.

Two-thirds of all STDs occur in people 25 years of age or younger.

One in four new STD infections occur in teenagers.

Cervical cancer in women is linked to HPV

Hepatitis B is 100 times more infectious than HIV

STDs, other than HIV, cost about $8 billion each year to diagnose and treat

One in five Americans have genital herpes, yet at least 80 percent of those with herpes are unaware they have it

At least one in four Americans will contract an STD at some point in their lives.

HPV is the most common STD in the United States.

More than 5 million people are infected with HPV each year.

Less than half of adults ages 18 to 44 have ever been tested for an STD other than HIV / AIDS.

At least 15 percent of all infertile American women are infertile because of tubal damage caused by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), the result of an untreated STD.

Two-thirds of Hepatitis B (HBV) infections are transmitted sexually, HBV is linked to chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.
