I'm on my third day without a cigarette, but the DH has a really hard time quitting, he hasn't had a cigarette in three days either, but come the weekend I'm sure he's going to give in, it's not that I don't have faith in him, but I've come to recognize the pattern. The problem is, I want to quit and I want to be healthier, but when he smokes it really weakens my resolve. Even though he smokes outside, just the thought of him smoking makes me crave a cigarette. How can I stay quit while he continues to smoke?
Thanks,
Ally

My roomies and I are all trying to quit---it's been a real problem for us. Three girls, who hang out all the time--no one's on the wagon all at the same time!! I'm like you, I'm usually good unless I see them doing it, then I lose all resolve.
You need to bring toothpicks, mint ones, and chew on 'em---that helps me, I can at least pretend and do the oral-fix part when they light up. Or keep a little card in your purse telling you to be strong. We've gotta quit, girlie! If you want to keep this thread/start a group or something to get some support, please do--I'm sure there are more of us who could use it.

Thanks Novachick, I try to take nice deep breaths and enjoy how easy it is to breathe when I'm not smoking. I have to do this. I'm going to TTC in September of '09, and I have to be as healthy as possible! I've tried to tell DH that he should do the same, but I guess hasn't been ready to quit yet, but I pray that he can really quit this time. PCOS makes having a baby hard enough without us adding factors to the equation!

Don't know about what meds you are on or how if would be affected, but my dh had the dr. prescribe Chantix for him to quit smoking. He took it for one month and he had quit completely before the end of the month. The first week you take the meds, you still smoke when you want. So, in less than 3 weeks time, he completely quit smoking. He says now that he doesn't even want a cigarette. He had the same problems ya'll are describing, he would be fine until he was around someone smoking or when he was drinking a beer. I also know some other people that took it and had just as good of results. HTH!!
i've quit smoking last year in may. it was literary over night...well the story when sth like this.
i always had problems with my sinuses and there was a period of about 2 weeks when i had a cold and couldnt breathe so i didnt smoke for 2 weeks...i would smoke a cig or two because ofcourse you crave for it...then when i got well i ofcourse started smoking again but the cigs tasted awfull. i actually felt sick but you get into the routine very fast.
then i was out one night and got drunk..so drunk that i couldnt eat or move from the bed the next 3 days. i wasnt even thinking about lighting a cig..thats how bad it was.
then when i recovered i just woke up one day i stopped smoking. the funny thing is it wasnt even hard. for the first 3 months i was avoiding ppl who smoked not because i craved a cig when i saw someone else, but because they smelled really bad. i mean, smokers smell really really bad. that breath, the smell on the clothes, in the hair...
basically it was easy for about 7 months. then i started smoking a cig or two when i got drunk..i was afraid it would become an addiction again. then it turned into a cig a day, then 3 cigs a day.
then i realised while i was smoking a cig that it's not really tasty and what the hell am i doing. and i stopped again.
i cant really explain how you stop smoking. i'm a person that basically rationalises everything and i worked it somehow in my mind.
i have pcos and smoking isnt really helping. even if i didnt have it, it isnt helping your overall health. lung cancer and cardiovascular problems arent sth to mess with. you're basically killing yourself...slowly!
one thing i did to suppress the craving was chocolate. a month ago i didnt know that chocolate isnt sth you really want in your ''diet'' if you have pcos. now i'm trying to get rid of that addiction.
the thing you need is will power.
your dh and his smoking isnt the problem. you're looking for excuses.i live with my mom and she smokes all the time. i'm tempted all the time....just dont give in. there isnt really any good advice i can give you. you just have to do it. if you make it through one month, two months it gets easier.
I'm trying to quit smoking too, and am anxiously waiting for my script of Chantix to get here. This is the first and only time I'm ever doing the mail order pharmacy. Dr faxed the script in almost two weeks ago and it still hasn't gotten here.

My DH smoked for 22 years! Horrible like 2 packs a day! He decided he wanted to try to quit and 2 people that he knew tried the Chantix stuff. He used it, smoked during his first week and wa la. He has now been smoke free since Nov 07" He still cant believe that he doesnt smoke.
Don't know if your insurance coverages it or not, but his didnt! It was a little over $100.00 US Dollars.
Good Luck to you!
You can do it (even if you (or hubby) might need some medical intervention)!!!

Ugh I feel for ya. I've been trying to quit for a LONG time now, I am thinking of trying Chantix since the reviews are good. Statistically you double your chances of quitting with that and other non-smoking meds, but I am not a pill pusher so I can understand if you don't want to take a pill. Also, I definitely recommend http://www.becomeanex.org/#learn_overview that site because it does help a lot. Breathing is a good idea! I don't like toothpicks, but I do chew on something gum, mints, etc. Good Luck and Feel Free to IM me @ MutableParadox on AIM if I am on and you have a craving come chat Again Good Luck! We can all do it! Stay Strong!

oh yeah forgot to mention to most important thing.
my health had immediately improved when i quit smokin. you can see changes after only 2-3 months. it's so much easier to breathe. also while i was smokin i had a cold almost every 3-4 months. since i stopped smoking last may i had a cold once this year. i also used to cough all the time. that stopped as well.
ally, dont give up. think about how much it's going to help your health.
I worry a little about Chantix 'cause of the negative psych effects being reported. You guys aren't? What do you know that I don't?

My mom and stepdad both took Chantix, and neither experienced any psych effects. My mom was able to quit smoking within a week, my stepdad was within a month. Both were ready to quit smoking.
My stepson did experience the negative psych effects, as well as most of the other s/e. He's got a 'depressive' personality, and I don't think he was ready to quit, because after the 12 week course, he still smokes.

My hubby didnt have any negative Pysch issues from Chantix. But I understand your concerns about it. As soon as I heard about those risk (after he started the meds) I made sure I asked him about his "feelings" all the time.

I took Wellbutrin and quit on February 28, 2005, after almost 20 years of a two pack a day habit. And I LOST weight!! I loved Wellbutrin!!

Get involved in animal rescue. You won't be sorry. Your heart may break, there may be times when your eyes are red-rimmed for days. You may lose faith in the goodness of people, but your spirit will be renewed by the resilience of those you save. It isn't easy, but it's worth it. I promise you, you will be forever changed.
i used Chantix to quit smoking. the only problem i had was an almost constant nausea if i didn't take it with food. other than that, no issues. my insurance covered some of it, cost me $35/month.
good luck! it is so worth it!!! i had no idea how great i would feel, it is pretty amazing!
