I went to an RE (Dr Allon in Houston)and my labs (one of the few back so far showed my TSH was 6.5 and was told by the nurse that it was a little high and that the normal range was .3-5.5. Well, after reading online it looks like the normal range has been lowered to .3-3.04. So, I am double the highest norm??? No wonder I can't lose, my house is now a mess, and could lay down and go to sleep anywhere anytime.
They took more blood to retest...waiting on the results. If it comes back that high still, I guess that means more meds?
I just found out 11/16 that I am diabetic. I have already been able to drop most of the meds and insulin (down to metformin only) and wonder if this could have possibly caused this? Could it be:
Thyroid caused my initial weight gain->increasing IR -> Raising testosterone->no periods-> causing all the PCOS symptoms->more weight gain and inability to lose ->Type II Diabetes. ????
Yeah, that's hypothyroidism and means you'll need to take levothyroxine (such a Synthroid) or Armour (natural hormone) for the rest of your life (really not so bad). I was dx'ed about the same TSH as you...but I've read stories of ppl who have gone over 600...off the charts. You'll see an increase in energy (among other things) when you start meds. Best wishes.

I've also noticed the last few weeks that I always feel like I have a lump in my throat...but never really thought much of it. I will have to tell the doctor that.
Doctors are still resisting the new recommended range that only goes up to 3.04. Research shows that that's a much better range than up to 5.5. I had some awful hypothyroid symptoms for years with a tsh around 5. When a doc finally tested my antibiodies, they were off the charts... proving I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I had to go on 75mcg of synthroid to get down to a tsh of 2 and feel like I have a new lease on life. I'm not exhausted constantly anymore!!!!!!!!!
Definately once you start taking meds for Hypothyroidism you will start to feel better. I can tell when it's time to adjust my dosage, I start feeling really ran down and I get the lump in my throat. Also, my doc recommends that my TSH level be around 2.0 if not TTC and 1.0 if I am. Good luck and keep us posted!! Oh and I am in the Houston area too...Spring!

Well, they tested again and it was 4.9....and saying that is not high enough to need meds.
Huh???
If the upper limit of norm is 3...that still seems high. When I mentioned the new scale...they didn't seem to care. I am going to mention this next appointment.
I would maybe seek a different doctor because you won't start to feel better if they don't get you on meds. I mean 4.9 is not like extremely high but it is defaintely high enough for meds and to make you feel lousy!

In my (albeit limited) experience, doctors HATE to diagnose low thyroid even if you have EVERY SINGLE symptom and there is no other explanation they can find.
I went to a nutritional center and they ran my labs-- my thyroid was on the border according to the range they use (2.969) but I felt awful and had for a year despite all my PCOS meds. I had almost every symptom, but the worst was the exhaustion and brain fog. I was even having speech problems.
Well, she started me on a little bit of natural thyroid and the results were almost instant. I feel like ME again.
My point here is just that you don't have to suffer. It is possible to find a doctor willing to let you try working on your thyroid levels and looking for an improvement.
