One of the biggest issues with being hypo is that typical docs treat the patients based on a range of numbers, not on symptoms. My numbers have been in the 4 or 5 range while I am on medication for hypothyroid, I am tired as hell, and docs say, "You're fine! You're in great health!" Crazy.

Like SouthernGal said - Be your own advocate!

I know you are probably too exhausted to want be your own advocate - but please don't waste years of your life feeling horrible. I lost 10+ years listening to doctors tell me I was fine, when I wasn't. Believe in yourself.
Ditto all of this!

I am so glad to see this thread! I got a copy of my medical records some time ago, and realized that my TSH was slowly creeping up, as well as symptoms, even though I kept being tested and told they were "normal."

When I actually saw the reports, I saw that my last test in 2006 showed my TSH to be 3.81, but the lab was still using the outdated values (up top 5.5) and labeled it normal. The sad thing is that my RE also called this normal.

I went to my PCP Friday and told him about my symptoms and the 2006 TSH of 3.81 and he re-ordered a TSH and T4 and if my TSH is still that high or higher, he is going to begin treating me. I am so thankful, because I have many symptoms of hypothyroidism, and my dad has very bad hypothyroidism. I have dry skin, extreme fatigue, constipation, brittle hair, etc.

Ok, so I FINALLY went in for my follow-up.

I argued with my Dr. because she said that the range is STILL up to 5.5. Even after I sited references. She did agree to re-test me and then start on a low dose of synthroid. I will hear from them Thursday.

I'll let you girls know what they did!

Thanks again for all the feedback!
