My Mood: Points: 18,771.89 Bank: 8,866,848.17 Total Points: 8,885,620.07 | TSH level of 5.408 My tsh level was 5.408, but my doctor doesn't see a problem with this. Should I push for something to help it or try to just increase exercise?
TIA

If your TSH is higher than the range for the lab it was drawn in, AND you have hypothyroid S/S, would push for low dose Synthroid. If you DON'T have S/S of hypothyroid, it is perfectly acceptable for a doctor to NOT treat this TSH. Hope this helps. |

My Mood: Points: 18,771.89 Bank: 8,866,848.17 Total Points: 8,885,620.07 | Well, I haven't had a chance to google it, but I know the lab's value is like 3 or 3.5. These are my symptoms: belly fat, fatigue (but I have 3 kids, plus nursing school), I crave carbs all the time (thought from IR?), insomnia (eventhough I am extremely tired all day).
After I had my first daughter, they put me on merida but it got recalled, I am going to call my doc in the am. I am not sure what I can take while nursing though?
Thanks for your input!
ETA: no matter what diet, eating healthy or excise I do, I just can't seem to lose all this weight.

If I remember, she said anything over 3 was out of normal range.
I just read an article that said normal TSH levels used to be considered normal from .5 to to 5, but they've recommened it be .3 to 3. Quote: |
This understanding led to the recommendation in January 2003 by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists that doctors "consider treatment for patients who test outside the boundaries of a narrower margin based on a target TSH level of 0.3 to 3.0."

If s/he is a GP s/he is probably not familiar with the current acceptable thyroid values (3.6 is the top of the normal range as stated in pp). I would ask for a referral to see an endo (if you need to ask), and make sure it is an endo who specializes in thyroid dysfunction/disease.
Good luck,
Cynthia

I've read several articles that say they are thinking of changing the normal #s to anything under 1.25...my internist said she likes to see it around 1 or just under 1 for optimal function. I agree that is when I feel the best. It's also very common for many women to never have thyroid issues until after having a baby/getting pregnant. Insomnia is defintiely a symptom, I lost tons of sleep when mine was elevated. And the bone-numbing fatigue was unbearable! It was awful. Best wishes to you!!!!

When I talked to my naturopath, she was really concerned and put me on a supplement (Thyroid Support Px) to see if the level improves. If not, I go back for traditional thyroid meds. Even if the level doesn't go to optimum on this supplement, I feel a whole lot better and it's made a huge difference.
I'd push this with your GP and ask for follow up, especially with your symptoms.

Mine is now standing at 4.7, so I've upped my dose from 37.5 to 50 mcg. |

Women are feeling like crap & are struggling w/ TTC when all it takes is a little pill to make things all better. They updated the #s in '01 so those are about SEVEN YEARS OLD!!!! Do a little research people!!!!! Don't always rely on DRs, be your own advocate!!!

My Mood: Points: 817.19 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 817.19 | hypothyroidism "range" For anyone with hypothyroidism, or even symptoms, I would go read the pages at http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com and http://www.realthyroidhelp.com.
One of the biggest issues with being hypo is that typical docs treat the patients based on a range of numbers, not on symptoms. My numbers have been in the 4 or 5 range while I am on medication for hypothyroid, I am tired as hell, and docs say, "You're fine! You're in great health!" Crazy.
Like SouthernGal said - Be your own advocate!
I know you are probably too exhausted to want be your own advocate - but please don't waste years of your life feeling horrible. I lost 10+ years listening to doctors tell me I was fine, when I wasn't. Believe in yourself.

(also, as point of reference, although the accepted "normal" range for TSH values is much narrower now, the "optimal" range for conception is narrower still - each of 3 REs that I've seen indicated that it should be between 1 and 2 if you're trying to conceive.)
