Default TSH level of .89

I just got TSH results back. The doctor says that a normal level is between .3 and 3.0. Mine is .89. Should I be concerned? I have a feeling since it's so close to the low end that I could be slightly hypothyroid. Of course I have trouble losing weight, and my basal body temperature is always in the 96 range.

I think you have HYPOthyroid and HYPERthyroid confused. When people have higher TSH they have hypothyroid and when it is too low they have hyperthyroid.

Have you had your T3 and T4 hormones checked?

From my understanding, .89 is a good TSH level. Right now mine is 6.67 and I am on meds to help my hypothyroidism.

I personally would not be concerned at this level, but maybe you should seek a second opinion regarding your symptoms. Good luck!

Your TSH is right where it should be. I think your symptoms may be a result of something other than your thyroid.

TSH and hypo- and hyperthyroidism are confusing. If TSH is too high, then you are hypothyroid, if it's too low, then you are hyperthyroid. When the TSH is high, it means the thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone for the body thus causing one to be hypo. When the TSH is low, then the thyroid is making too much thyroid hormone, thus making one hyperthyroid. It's kind of confusing, I know.

I have hashimoto's thyroiditis with hypothyroidism and after a year of treatment with slowly upping my dose of Synthroid my TSH has gone from 7+ to .75 (my test has the same range as yours). This is a good number. For me at least. But if you feel you need further clarification of your numbers I would call your dr. and ask your specific questions. Including how you are feeling. You don't want to go under the normal range. That would mean you are going hyperthyroid. Definately call you dr. and ask questions. Did they check your T4?

Are you taking anything for your thyroid? If so, the medication can suppress your TSH but you could still have a low level of actual thyroid hormones.

Also, it's hard to get a good picture of what your thyroid is doing without checking your free T3 and free T4. The TSH is unreliable in my opinion, and that of many other thyroid patients.
