Default TTC with Diabetes and PCOS

I have lurked on this board for quite some time knowing that one day I would be actively TTC. Well the time has come for us and we made our first appointment with a fertility specialist for September 1. I just want to know if anyone here who has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes has conceived successfully and what treatments you went through. I also have about 8 weeks until my appointment so I want to try and get my A1C as good as possible. The last time I had bloodwork was about 3 months ago and my AIC was 7.5. I would like that to come down before I start the process. I currently take 2000mg/daily of Metformin, have taken that for about a year now. Any information or your personal stories are greatly appreciated! Here we go!

I was diagnosed with Type II in Sept '05. When we actively started ttc with the help of an RE in May '06 (after ttc on our own for 3+ years) I was on either 1500 or 2000mg of met and my A1C was 5.8. DD was conceived in Oct '06 thanks to an amazing RE (my 2nd one-the first one sucked), clomid, HCG trigger & IUI. As soon as the 2nd beta confirmed the pregnancy my RE & endo took me off the met and put me on insulin as it is much easier to adjust throughout the pregnancy. DD was born at a healthy 8lbs in July '07 after a very uneventful pregnancy. It's usually standard with diabetics to be seen by a high risk OB throughout the pregnancy-I saw him & my regular OBs. Yes, it's a lot of dr. appts but it's also very reassuring every time you get to see the baby on u/s or hear the heartbeat.
I know this is getting ahead but when you finally have that tiny little baby I strongly encourage you to at least try to breastfeed. I truly believe BFing & staying on the insulin-therefore keeping my body in check-is the reason my surprise baby boy was conceived.

Good luck!!!

Thanks so much for the post! I am certainly thinking that far ahead and I am completely prepared for being put on insulin. I also plan to breast feed as long as my body is ok with that. (and if I got pregnant with #2 in the process, then wonderful!) I feel like I have waited so long to have a baby for this reason, and that reason, but now is finally the right time. I am excited, but a little nervous. I don't want to get into that pattern of trying so hard and then being devastated if it doesn't happen. I guess I am just trying to keep a level head and go in prepared for whatever. Thanks again for the post, it is nice to hear a story with a happy ending!

You will have to keep me updated on how the doctor appointment goes. I never thought that PCOS and Type 1 could occur together, until I was diagnosed. I hope you get answers to all of your questions! Good luck!

I am type-2 diabetic also and we started ttc in 05 but my sugars werent really under control. But then in july 07 I started watching what I eat and got my sugars under control and got pg ended up seeing a high risk ob and was put on insulin my a1c was 6 the pg ended up in a m/c after that I stopped taking the insulin and just let my sugar go. So I found a new dr and then we did clomid and met xr 2000mg for about a yr and no bfp. Then I changed to femera tried that for 2 months still no bfp. So I figured it was my sugars again so in Oct 08 I went back to a healthy diet lost 25lbs and on xmas night I O'ed and then 10dpo got a bfp. I have been going weekly to a high risk ob and reg ob since I found out I was pg to maintain my sugars. I'm on Met xr 1500mg and 131 units of Humulin N (long acting insulin) and 129 units of Humalog (fast acting with meals). Since my sugars have been controlled really well throughout the entire pregnancy the baby is doing great and not growing to big. Its just alot of poking between checking my sugars 6 times a day and then 5 shots but all worth it in the end to have a healthy baby boy. And I only have 23 more days to go till my induction. And then they will lessen my injections. Good luck in your journey and I hope that you get a bfp real soon.

Good luck with your appointment please keep us posted on what happens.

I also am a long time pcos gal and was dx'ed type II DM in 2006. I think that I went through a pretty long "denial" phase where I didn't watch what I ate and just plain old got depressed about everything. My DH and I have been off of BCP for about 2 years with NOTHING and I mean NOTHING happening......I didn't even have periods on my own. But, about 5 weeks ago I decided that enough was enough and now was the time to change things. Being a NICU nurse myself I knew that if I ever did get pregnant living my "unhealthy" lifestyle that I would likely have a baby like I take care of everyday...and that's not what I wanted.....b/c I couldn't control myself. So I began the South Beach Diet and also started taking Insulite vitamins along with 2000mg Glumetza daily. I have since lost about 20 pounds and wouldn't you know......I ovulated!!!!! I am praying that in 2 weeks my news will be good news.

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes in August 2008, in the middle of TTC. We stopped our Clomid treatments in order to get my disease under control and to ensure my body was healthy enough to get pregnant and to maintain my pregnancy. When I was 1st diagnosed, I was so depressed! Diabetes before I was even 30! I couldn't believe it, I picked myself up and said, "This time next year, I will NOT be diabetic....I had a lap-band put in in March and one year after my diagnosis of Diabetes, I am off all of my meds and have a totally normal A1C...lower than what it was when my diabetes was under control with meds! We are now TTC again, 40 lbs down with no diabetes...I think we finally have all our ducks in a row, fingers crossed for the big O!
