Default Two weeks on Atkins - only 3 lb loss??

I know a 1-2 pound loss per week is healthy, but what happened to all of the water weight I was supposed to lose? Most people I know dropped 8-10 pounds during induction. I have been very strict on this diet, no cheating at all. Do you think I need to cut back more on calories or keep my carbs further under the limit? TIA!

No I think you're doing fine. The one huge misconception of Atkins is that everybody will lose tons of weight very quickly. That is not the case. The only reason it seems like it is because the people who do lose the weight are very vocal about it while the people who don't just keep their mouths shut.

If you don't lose water, it just means you weren't bloated to begin with. (That's a good thing!) Also remember that having PCOS puts you in a completely different playing field than "most people" and that any weight loss should be celebrated. Don't look down at "only" losing 3 pounds, look up that you *lost* weight. Just keep it up and you'll be at goal before you know it.

I agree, you're losing and that's what counts. As long as you keep losing, don't worry about not getting the big initial drop. I'm sure it's frustrating, but you are you, not all those other people.

If you are still concerned, you can always post what you are eating here, maybe one of us will see something. Were you on any diet before Atkins? Is this your first time on Atkins? Do you have very much to lose? All sorts of things can affect how fast you lose. And yes, sometimes counting calories is necessay too.

Thanks girls! Yes I do have quite a bit to lose - over 100 lbs sadly. I've been on many, many diets before, weight watchers was my last. I'm used to losing very quickly at first - on WW I lost a pound a DAY for the first few weeks! I really think I need to cut down on calories. I've written down what I've eaten for the past few days and I'm coming in waaaaay over 1200 per day, so that's why it is slow right now. Geez, 1200 calories is like a piece of cheese and two peanuts! Oh, I also forgot to mention I'm on 100 mgs of clomid - others have said that clomid can interfere with weight loss. Does anyone have experience with that?

Yes, what everyone else has said is true.

Six years ago, and before my PCOS had really gotten out of control I was able to lose much easier with Atkins.

I've been perfect the last 3 weeks on the plan, no Atkins bars or shakes (which can cause me to stall), etc. I lost 10 lbs. during induction, then have bounced back up and down the same two pounds for the last week. It's so discouraging. Because the first time I did this, I lost about 25 lbs. The first month.

But I'm going to stick with it. Because I feel better--I am sleeping better. I'm not hungry all day. I don't have joint and heel spur pain. My skin is glowing and a cystic acne I've had for four months now is finally healing up, with no other changes. Even my facial hair growth seems to be slowing. If I never lose another pound, at least I can resist cheating knowing this diet is helping the condition that helped put all this *#)@% weight on me to begin with.

Best wishes and please stay encouraged!

Edited to add--please do post your menu, you may be eating too little fat or calories. So look at that before counting calories.

Ok, here's a manu sample - this is exactly what I ate yesterday. It's pretty typical, of what I eat all of the time.

Breakfast:
2 sticks of string cheese (80 calories each, I forget the fat, <1 carb)
green tea with Splenda

Lunch:
Breast of a rotisserie(sp?) chicken
2c of mixed greens
3 TBSP Ranch dressing (7g carbs)

Snack: coffee with heavy cream (45 calories/TBSP, <1 g carbs)
and Splenda

Dinner: NY strip steak (I think), 1/2 c mushrooms sauteed in butter

Dessert: 2 scoops of Breyers low carb ice cream.

I should be coming in at around 30 carbs, right? Any help is appreciated!

How many carbs are in the ice cream? We don't have that in the UK and up until that point I was counting about 13-15g of carbs.

How much strip steak and is that what I think it is i.e. strips of beef steak.

To be honest your counts look really low, dependant upon the addition of the ice cream

Without the ice cream I counted about 1,000 depending how much steak and butter you have that could be more.

I'm with you on the rotisserie chicken though!!! I love it.

Sometimes if I have worked over at work and I know I am going to be really hungry when I get home I call in for a spit roast chicken on the way; eat the breast with salad and some blue cheese dressing.

If I remember correctly the ice cream has 4g net carbs per half cup, I probably had a little more than that - 3/4 cup maybe? The steak was just a regular steak, medium sized. So do you think I need to ADD fat or calories? Am I doing okay on carbs?

I'd say you're definately coming in under 30g of carbs - probably between 20 and 25.

I don't know how many calories are in the ice cream but I would say you ate about 1,000 calories without including it.

I am following the same sort of diet myself at the moment; about 20g of carbs and low calorie eating because I know it is the only thing that works for me weight loss wise. I don't lose huge amounts of weight as some do on Atkins but if you did, a lot of that would be water weight anyway.

How is your cycle at the moment. Sometimes Atkins induction brings on AF which brings with it some weight gain which could mask your true weight loss.

I would say if you are not finding it difficult to stick to then stay with it and see what results you have. If you continue to lose weight on a regular basis then it's working!!

Also, you may be one of those people who suddenly have a whoosh fairy visit ......... some find they don't lose any weight for a couple of weeks then whoosh they lose it in one fell swoop.

Keep us posted with your progress!!

Your 'water' weight loss will also depend on where you are in your menstrual cycle. The two weeks before AF most women won't lose (and many gain) even if they're doing everything PERFECT. Best to stay away from the scale during that time.

Also, the ice cream might be a problem. A big problem. I would ditch it. And always count TOTAL carbs. Not net carbs.

Also stay away from sugar free drinks with citric acid like diet sodas and Crystal Lite. For many people citric acid will grind your weight loss to a halt.

Hey there, I too have been doing atkins for 3 weeks. Although I refuse to step on a scale, I know I am losing weight. Personally, I do the body measurements, it feels great. Are you exercising? If so, you may be gaining muscle, which weighs more than fat. This is where measuring comes in handy. Keep up the work though. It's a hard diet, but it pays off for fast results-I say in 6 weeks you'll see a huge difference. I have to tell you though, long term this is a hard diet to follow. If I were you, I would go back to induction for a few weeks and see if that helps.

In two weeks, that wouldn't be muscle, but if she's strength training, her muscles would absolutely be holding onto water. Whenever I do a hard leg workout, I'll put on 3-5 pounds (of water) over the course of the next 2 or 3 days, while my legs recover.

For about 3 months I weighed myself every day, and I started to see the patterns emerge between my weight gain and AF, accidently eating too many carbs, ingesting citric acid, and leg workouts.

It taught me to only weight the first or second day after AF, and watch for citric acid, and not count 'net' carbs...
