When I had gestational diabetes I saw a dietician.
She put me on a very strict carb counting plan of 30g per meal and 15g per snack, and told me to never skip any meals, to have a mid-morning and a mid-afternoon snack every day, and to drink my 8x8oz water religiously.
I used my meter two hours after every meal and morning fasting to make sure things were staying on track. It's way more important to keep tight control during pregnancy....to keep below 100 for morning fasting, below 140 at the 2hr readings.
You should consult with your Dr and get a referral to a nutrition class.
My goals pre-pregnancy are those stated by the pp, but in the even I get pg, things will be even stricter; 90 fasting and 120 after meals (2 hours).
Every Dr is a bit different. My nutrition class was based on the ADA.
Talk to your Dr and see what his target goals are for you and then ask for a script for a nutrition class. They are very informative and you learn soooo much!

I was totally obsesesive about my glucose during my pregnancy. I was hospitalized three times prior to the birth for low amniotic fluid and ended up having the hospital nutirtionist up in my room because they were trying to feed me too many carbs. They insisted I eat the meal, so I did, and then my glucose was too high! So when the next meal came I ate only what I knew I could and sent the rest back. That got their attention -- a pregnant woman not eating enough! lol
Anyway, my son was only 8lbs 6oz, delivered c-section because his head (14") wouldn't fit through my pelvic girdle. He was perfectly healthy and had perfect glucose at birth.
That was all in 2000, pre South Beach, and before the low carb diets were back in style. There was NOTHING low carb in the grocery stores. It was HORRIBLE trying to get enough calories in while keeping the carbs down! It is all so much easier now thanks to South Beach and Atkins coming into and back into style.

If you like to read I do recommend reading Dr Atkin's New Diet Revolution and the original South Beach Diet books. There is a lot of good information in there about how our bodies use carbs, the different kinds of carbs, and much more.
Another good book is The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet....which got very detailed with physiological info about the use of carbs in our bodies.
I don't personally follow any of these diets, although back in my dieting days I tried the first two. I just follow my own diet.
Yeah i follow my own diet as well.....but need a few guidelines that re helpful..

I am just starting to deal with this as well. I was diagnosed IR pre-pregnancy and am getting tested for GD as we speak (tests results should be back soon but I already showed sugar in my urine).
Is there a website that lists foods that are good for Type II? I was on this website http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php where it lists their opinion of the top 130 healthiest foods and by chance I saw a few that were specifically good for Type II diabetes (lentils was one, cant recall the other offhand).
Im sure I will have to see a dietician at some point, and will have to learn to start counting carbs and such, but I was hoping for a nice list perhaps online that says "Yes to these foods" and "No to these foods" for a beginner like myself. I would much rather know that I can eat endless amounts of say, broccoli and carrots and know that something is off limits rather than have to count very strictly.
Does anyone know of a good website for this?

The first reason is that two different people don't react the same way to the same food. I can eat a portion of pasta without a major blood glucose spike....but the next diabetic can't.....I can't eat any potato products at all I'm so sensative to them, some diabetics can eat a portion of them.
The second reason is portion control. You might think Ice Cream would be on the NO list; right? Well.....a PINT of ice cream is a definate NO. But a proper PORTION of ice cream is an excellent treat. It's all about proper portion sizes. If I wasn't so sensative to potato products I could have 15 Pringle crisps and that would be the right amount of carbs for a snack for me.....and for you that might work okay. A CAN of pringles is out no matter who you are.
So, you see, it isn't a specific food or foods that's out.....it's the amount of it.
I keep a purse sized Carb Counter book right in my purse....an extremely handy tool for counting carbs, calories and/or fat. And I have my measuring cups handy in the kitchen. Learning portion control was the key to how I eat. I don't NOT eat anything.....but there are a lot of things that I have to be careful how much of it I allow myself.
I had Gd with my first ds whom was 9lbs 6ozs. and I was borderline with my second ds whom was 10lbs 6.5 ozs..So my pcp said I should be ok to get preggo as long as my obgyn keeps tabs on my blood sugar levels....

I am on the American Diabetic Association Exchanges. I eat 1200 to 1400 calories a day. My doctor and diabetic dietician gave me a book that lists what a serving size is for different foods and what category the food comes under like fats, carbs, non carb veggie, protein etc. You can get the list off the American Diabetes Association website. Its a long list, but it is very informational.
