I read an article posted on here today that said that type 2 PCOS was caused by BCP!!!! Is this true? My BF always said the BCP messed me up but Inever believed him, then I read this article. I am non-IR, which is what type 2 PCOS is according to this article. I tried to look something up about iot for further research but couldn't find anything. Anyone know anymore about this? If it is true, is there soemthing I can do about it? I never heard that BCP could cause PCOS and if I did know I never would have gone on them.

Siobhan,
I have not read anything about this before this article and I have spent the last two months on a quest to read everything I can get my hands on that has to do with PCOS. When I find a new article, I always check out the authors and the source. Being a .com site, it is hard to track the source. When I checked out who wrote it, they don't have any medical credentials. Many alternative medicine articles are written by Doctors of Osteopathy or by others in the world of alternative medicines. If there is a link, I would think that Kat has found a great article and it is posted in her forum on great reading.

I agree that one should check out where their reference sources come from, however i disagree that Doctor's of Osteopathy are not medically trained, they got to medical school too for four years and are scientifically trained. They get a degree just like MD's do, they just have a little bit different philosophy and will look at different factors than regular MD's do. Here's a wiki article explaining more than i can: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_osteopathy
Anyway, just wanted to inform people so they don't frown on DO's and their training. Thanks!
BCP does not cause PCOS. BCP does minimize the symptoms rather well so the common belief is that PCOS may develop while on BCPs and you wouldn't know it, because there would be no major symptoms.

Oh serene, I didn't mean that DO's were bad. They are great and know alot more about nutrition and other homeopathic remedies than other docs. I was recommending them, not dissing them.

I guess i miss read what you were saying!! Sorry about that. I understand now that you are saying that they might be better sources of information than articles that have uncertain backgrounds.
I am reading through the articles they cited and I don't think this article was researched very well. The article I already read through discussed how BCPs used to treat PCOS may exacerbate IR, but it doesn't say anything about BCPs actually causing PCOS. The one I'm reading now seems to be saying the same thing. The Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism appears to be free and open-access, so you should be able to look up the cited articles yourself if you wanted to read them.

I didn't see anything about 'cause', either.
See the stickies in the BCP forum with articles debating whether or not cysters should be on bcps at all or long term.
There's also a lengthy thread in the forum where many, many cysters say they had not ever taken bcp's when they were diagnosed.

To be honest, this seems like an idea put forth by people who don't know what they're talking about. Girls go on birth control at a relatively young age, when their cycles are still up in the air even if they're 'normal' (or they're put on them because something *isn't* normal, without the doctor bothering to find out what the problem is), and don't come off them until they're ready to have kids. Which is when the problem that was there in the first place comes through loud and clear. That's not 'a causes b', that's the issue being hidden for a long time.
