Default type II diabetes - metformin making it worse??

Just wondering - has anyone else had their metformin make their blood sugars worse? My doctor had me on 2000mg for 2 years now, and my blood sugar readings were still high. My weight is good (130 lbs at 5' 7"), I exercise about 5 days a week, I was eating well, etc, but my blood sugar was still on the high side. I started taking my herbs from my Nauropath seperately & I noticed that my blood sugar readings were decent after the herbs, but they jumped *up* after the metformin!!! I went off the metformin & my readings have been so much better (still taking the herbs & eating well). I think my body just doesn't do well with synthetic medications. Anyone else hear anything of this???

I have never heard of this. Did you try taking met a second time? Maybe you had an illness or something that jumped your numbers up during the same time. I dont really have any others ideas other than what you said, your body doesnt like synthetic medications.

i have heard of this becuase my endro told me if the met didn't help my levels go down then he was going to put me on insulin no if ans or buts - if the met didn't do what it should do the insulin was the only choice .. thankfully my body decided that it didn't need the met and started making use of its own insulin stores enough so the doc took me off of the metformin all together.

Thanks for the replies. After talking it over with my Naturopath, it sounds like what happened was I was allergic to it. A little over 2 years ago my regular doctor started me off on 500mg daily, and it wasn't helping & he kept increasing it. In the meantime, I started seeing the Naturopath (fall of 2004, I believe) and I think the herbs that she put me on were doing the work. Whe I ran out of those and just took the met my blood sugar would sky rocket (190s fasting after being under 120 fasting on the herbs). Also I was sooooo tired, like someone drugged me, and no one could figure out what was wrong with me, not the regular doctors or the Naturopath. After being off the met for several weeks, that hasn't happened, and my blood sugars have been good on just the herbs. Thank the Universe I found out what was going on!!!

I understand. After being in really really bad straights and therefore on no medication for anything I had gotten pretty bad and after a trip to the ER they put me back on met this time it made my sugars jump. According to my dr that was because it was more likely that i was becomeing more inuslin dependant but wanted to try me on some other meds before he gave me insulin i hope that helps
