Default U/S Worries

I've been told that U/S or to many of them can be harmful to baby, something to do with radation. During this pregnancy i've had 3 tomorrow will be my 4th and i still haven't had the U/S that checks baby at 18-20 weeks is this to many i'm really worried i've done something wrong.

Ultrasound is not harmful to your baby. I have had 8 already (not counting the small ones done at every appt early on to check baby when they couldn't use the doppler) and I have to have one every week from now until delivery. Don't worry about the number of ultrasounds that you have or will have they will not harm your little one.

I have quite a few my first pg and he is just fine. I've had at least 10 u/s this pg. I had 3 or 4 in the beginning due to low progesterone levels and some spotting, my doctor wanted to make sure everything looked ok. He also orders u/s to check for the baby's hb at every appointment until 12-14 weeks because it's so hard or impossible to get the hb with the doppler. I've had the rest since my 20 week u/s due to a few different reasons. I was diagnosed with extra amniotic fluid and GD in late May/early June, both of which will have the doctor want to keep an eye on the baby. The last 6 weeks of this pg I've had one almost every week, along with a NST every week. I'm not worried about ds#2 at all, u/s are proven to be safe.

Well that makes me feel alot better! Thank you all so much for reponding. I probably won't be able to make my 18-20 weeks U/S it might be later like but i'm sure as long as they check everything is ok.

ultrasound is not radiation, they are sound waves and completely harmless to your baby....though the last one caused me pain cause the darn tech pushed so hard!!!!

I've had 6 so far this pg. Last pg I had a umbilical cord issue called "umbilical vein verix" and they did 2u/s and 3nst's a week for around 8wks! So I had a ton of them and everything was A-ok with baby. Don't worry.

Ya, same here, I had about seven or eight US with Elisa. They are perfectly harmless. I also used a home Doppler (sound waves like US) almost every day when I was pg with her in the third trimester. Didn't hurt her at all. Don't worry!

I haven't made a decision on this issue. I really feel 99% of the time, they don't cause problems, but it is shocking how little research has been done on u/s safey as they are used today (more frequently, higher doses). You can see babies move away from the waves, so something must be going on in there. There is some evidence that they might be linked to autism. I'm thinking that I'm only going to do one if it's medically necessary, but not sure yet. Don't kick yourself over what decisions you've made, and it's good that you're trying to be informed.

I have only had a few ultrasounds. However, I did use the doppler a lot in the beginning. But I haven't had her yet. Its really your choice and they can't force you to get them done.

The autism thing really...?? I mean I don't know how to even comment on that. Medical doctors don't know for sure what causes autism. Or why more boys have it then girls. I mean who knows! Ist just one of those things. I guess its a chance we all take.

*sigh* I can never seem to get into a healthy discussion without causing conflict. Sorry. I simply think they should be doing more studies on the issue JUST IN CASE and until then, I am personally going to limit u/s use. They did x-rays on women's pelvis' for 30 years before someone realized they were causing cancer in the babies, you know?

I think it's excellent technology if you have any problems. You can bet if I have serious pain in the next few weeks, I'll be sitting my butt down in that RE's office until they u/s me. BUT, I'm not getting one just to see if there's a baby in there. Same if I have decreased movement or a million other indicators later on. I might even get the 18-20wk one just to check some things.

I have two healthy girls and have had a ton of u/s.

I was high risk because of GD all three pregnancies and have had more than 20 u/s in each one. None of my kids have autism.

I would rather have an u/s to see if there are any problems than to just stick my head in the sand and hope for everything to be the best. There are worse things that can be wrong besides autism.

If you have GD you risk having your child stillborn...and they use u/s to check the placenta and umbilical cord to make sure the blood is still flowing.
