Default Ugh, My booty hurts...

My metformin is really killing my tummy and booty. I know it takes some time for my system to get used to it so I'm trying to hang on. Yesterday I went to the bathroom so many times my booty started hurting. I even asked DH to rub it , but he gave me this crazy look and said no. Is it okay to take something for you stomach or do I just have to deal with the awful side effect?

I just waited it out. I've been on it for 3 weeks, and the s/e are finally lessening. I would call the pharmacy and ask them if it's ok to take something. How long have you been on the Met?

Well, I think it's your call. Everyone is different with the s/e. Some say that they go away within a couple weeks, others it takes longer. Are you starting out slowly and working up your dosage? I started at 500 mg for the first week, and then 1000mg, and then 1500mg per day. At the start of each upping, I had bad tummy issues. As my body got used to the Met, it's not nearly as bad anymore after 3 weeks. If you don't think you can try to wait it out for a little while, I would call your doc or pharmacy and see if you can take something to help. Some cysters like the extended release form of Met better, saying it helps with the tummy/booty issues. I totally feel for you!!

I read on here somewhere (sorry for not putting the source, I forgot what thread) that someone was taking Immodium AD because of the s/e with Met. I've been on the Met ER for the last couple of weeks and have had no s/e (other than a little constipation). If you're not on the ER or XR...you may want to switch if you don't start feeling within a week or two.

Best wishes!

Yeah you can link the upset tummy with some of the foods you eat as well. salad always done it for me. However are you on the regular or xr form? The xr form maybe better for you it was for me.

OH how much are you taking? I took 500mg for like 2 months before I could increase it. Some dr's tell you to increase it every week but you have to do what you can handle. It took me almost a year to get to 2000mg

It helped me, in that first two or three weeks, to totally AVOID the fatty/greasy foods altogether, eat lower carbs than I had been, and when I DID eat carbs, they HAD to be whole wheat/whole carbs and a small amount. No salads through that time, as well. I took my Met (500 mg) in the middle of Breakfast, and that helped a LOT. Sometime about week 2 1/2 I tried a side salad (SMALL) along with my protein and it did great!

You might take a closer look at your foods themselves, and try the met in the middle of the meal. What can it hurt? Maybe it'll save some booty pain!

Yup, I use Immodium to deal with the s/e. I also used Tums and Gas-X the last time I took it.

Hi. I started Met back in June (of this year). I am taking the regular Met. I worked up to a dose of 1700 mg (850 mg in the morning and 850 mg in the evening). My side affects are horrible as well. In fact just a few weeks ago I couldn't take it anymore and stopped taking it. I saw my Dr. last week about it to see if there were any other possibilities...the only one was Avnadia (the one that is causing all the heart issues) so I asked him if I could take Imodium A/D to combat the diarrhea. He said that was fine so I asked how often I could take it without it being harmful to me and he said once or twice a week would be fine. Talk to your dr. and see what they have to say about it too! Hope it helps! Good luck!
