Name: Carrie

Age: 27

Family Situation: Married to Steven for one year, 2 cats no kids (yet! - fingers crossed)

PCOS Symptoms: Facial/body hair, excess weight, tiredness etc. No problems conceiving but had miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy in past 8 months, possible have a genetics problem. Been vaguely diagnosed for a few years but only recently medicated.

Worst thing about PCOS: Facial hair and massive weight gain and tiredness - constant

Meds used: Metformin and Xenical

NHS/Private?: NHS Docs and consultant are really nice but not very informative and only just pulled their finger out. Had to get most of my info from internet.

Action Taken: Had a scan a few years ago which came up with nothing, docs didn't really want to do anything else and when became pregnant said it should help PCOS. But had a very drawn out miscarriage, then a very drawn out ectopic pregnancy 3 months later. After slipping into a heavy depression which i knew would pile on the pounds joined Weight Watchers (16 weeks ago) and have lost 32lb, but have a long long way to go. Gonna try for a baby again in a few months when lost more weight.

PM or E-mail: e-mail carriepearson@hotmail.com

Any other info:I am not best pleased with the lack of action by docs etc. Only when they thought i had problems with pregnancy did i get anything looked into. Really quite upset that everyone had me down as being lazy and stuffng my face constantly when i wasn't. For years the docs have been telling me to lose weight but have given me no help. I think that little rant is over for a while now - still coming to terms and feeling very sick.

NAME Fran

AGE 19

FAMILY living with my mum and brother, have a boyfriend matt for about 8 months

PCOS SYMPTOMS Overweight, Mood swings, skin tags, dark patches of skin under my arms, irregular periods, thin hair on my head, too much hair everywhere else, IR, not sure about my firtility yet, but im hoping its ok =/

WORST THING ABOUT PCOS Thinning hair, too much hair everywhere else, weight

MEDICATION USED 2500mg metformin, 600mg ferrous sulphate, dianette.
Metformin helped me to lose 2 stone, made my periods regular again, but thats all ive noticed so far. Ferrous sulphate should eventually make the hair on my head thicker again but will take a few years, i hope its worth the wait. dianette should improve my hair everywhere else.

NHS OR PRIVATE NHS, took a few years to get diagnosed but finaly diagnosed april 04.

Name: Rhonda

Age: 30

Family Situation: Married to Paul on 10th August 05. No kids, but recently got Westie puppy - Ellie.

PCOS Symptoms: Alot of facial hair, very overweight, very irregular periods until after 6 years of taking Dianette. TTC for 5 years during first marriage, but with little advice or help from GP. Have stopped Dianette and any BCP for over 12 months now, and AF regular every 31 days, until this month. I am sure its going back to pre-bill irregularity. Tiredness, all the time!

Worst thing about PCOS: Facial hair and massive weight gain and tiredness. I also obsess about becoming a mother, and get deeply depressed at the thought that this might never happen.

Meds used: Have never been prescribed any meds.

NHS/Private?: NHS, but eventually stopped going when split with first husband.

Action Taken: I have really only been doing the BD when I know its supposed to be 'o' time, but I dont even actually know if I am. Until finding this site, I didnt even know 1% of the PCOS facts that I know now, so I have just made an appt with my GP to get more info from my file from 6 years ago.

PM or E-mail: A pleasure to hear from anyone. E-mail rhonda.bradley@deni.gov.uk

Any other info: I am disgusted at how little support and info I received from the hospital years ago. I do not intend to let this happen again this time, and I would be very grateful for any advice my UK cysters can offer.

Name: Sam

Age: 37

Family Situation: Married for 5 years. Lucky to have a 3 year old son.

PCOS Symptoms: Irregular/non-existent periods, cystic acne, excess hair. With Metformin periods a lot more regular and acne nearly gone.

Worst thing about PCOS: Definitely the infertility due to lack of ovulation. The excess hair and acne is also a real confidence knocker but, in my opinion, is nothing compared to the pain of infertility.

Meds used: Metformin. To ttc no. 2 clomid/IUI/IVF.

NHS/Private?: Both. Feel very let down by the NHS but I do feel a lot depends on the area that you live in.

Action Taken: Conceived my son after ovarian drilling, low carb diet and metformin. Not really sure which one of these did the trick - probably a mixture of all 3. Call me unlucky but after the birth of my son I had to have a d&c because of retained products which left me with scarring in my uterus (now removed) but the combination of this and PCOS means I have not yet been able to conceive again. Now plan to try IVF again. If that fails will try the low carb diet.

PM or E-mail: Either. A pleasure to hear from anyone.

Age: 20
Family situation: When I am at home, I live with my Dad, Mum and my four younger sisters - Abbi, Cherri, Debra and Jess.
About me: I am crazy Christian who loves to have fun. (when I get the time to) I have just finished a gap year project where I volunteered in a church in Essex and got involved with the community and youth there. I am at University in Huddersfield studying Youth and Community Work in my first year of a three year degree course. I live in student accomodation with three lovely third year art students.
PCOS symptoms: No period at all since Sept 04 (I have definately saved a lot of money there though - yay!) Excess hair everywhere esp my face which is really annoying and awful looking, mass amounts of acne on back and esp on face, lots of excess weight - really difficult to lose any, easier to put weight on even on heathly diet, l get so tired and lethargic all the time even with loads of sleep and I have a really bad problem with depression which has affected me most of my life.
Worst thing about PCOS: The weight problem, the acne and the hair cuz its affecting my self-esteem which sets the depression off...
Medication used: Nothing as yet
NHS or Private: None at minute - I have got no help from any doctors I have been to so far. They all told me to go away and lose some weight!!!
Action taken against PCOS: In search of a doctor who is willing to help me and trying to find out as much about PCOS as I can and get loads of support from others who have it.
PM or Email?: Go for it, I am happy to get PM and emails from all of you especially with support and help and advise. My email is crazyirishmunchkin@hotmail.co.uk
Any other information: Thanks so much for reading this and I hope that we can be a real support and encouragement to one another.

Question Hi I'm new to the group

Name: Heya my name is Eilish and I am new to this group.

Age: 25

Family Situation: Married a year now, have a dog that is my baby at the moment.

PCOS Symptoms: Irregular periods, Spots and excess hair on different parts of my body, thinning of hair and sore scalp. I feel tired all day even though I eat healthy, with plenty of fruits and vegs, cant get out of bed in the morning think I might be depressed. Cysts on my ovaries.

Meds used: Dianette, the only reason was for my skin and to try regulate my periods, but I noticed I had no sex drive and when I did it was quite painful lost alot of confidence so I came off it. My sex drive has returned but now I constantly feel tired, it’s an every day struggle with PCOS.

NHS/Private?: Don’t have nhs in Ireland but for years I was visiting my gp and I was so fed up not getting any answer's I decided to go private, it was confirmed 2 weeks ago I had PCOS, but saying that the doctor was so rude and didn’t give me any further info not unless I wanted to get pregnant, I still feel like im in the dark with this. Don’t know anything about insulin or alot of other stuff you guys have been talking about. It’s so hard because I can’t get my head round this. This week I took a trip to my GP told her everything the specialist told me she is now giving me a different story, she said because I am not over weight I have a mild case of PCOS and that I will be able to conceive naturally. Well I don’t know what to think, one is say saying different than the other.

Action Taken: I've ordered books on PCOs and on the insulin factor because I cant get an info out of the doctors they don’t want to know, not unless I want to get pregnant I feel like the race is on and im not able to handle the stress and the let downs that’s in store for me.

PM or E-mail: e-mail email me if you have any info you have to share or if you just want to have a good waffle and get it off your chest. skutzerella@yahoo.com

Any other info: I hope we can help each other I would love to talk to other women with PCOS and share different stories and experiences, Thanks.

Welcome Eilish! Where in Dublin are you from...I grew up in Dundrum/Sandyford although i haven't lived in Dublin now for six years. Miss it sometimes.

I hope you find out all the information you need. There's so much information here that's well worth reading and even printing off and bringing to your doctor. I went undiagnosed for years even though i was going to my doctors and telling them all was not right...I had heaps of classic symptoms and it was never picked up. To be honest I just don't think GP's know enough about PCOS. But there's more and more information coming out about it so lets hope that things will be better for PCOSers soon.

Browse the boards and ask any questions you like...

Lisa

Unhappy

Name: Sinéad
Nickname on soulcysters: SineadB
Age: 23
Family situation: Live at home in Dublin with my folks but waiting on my apartment to be built that myself and my boyfriend have bought together - planning to move in in March.
About me: At the moment im studying Planning in college at Masters level. Did a degree in Surveying. Just basicaly plodding along, living my life. Have being going out with my boyfriend for 6 years, since i was 16. He is my life - i love him to bits.
PCOS symptoms: Was on the pill for about 3 years, when i came off it, about 3 years ago my periods were really irregular - about 4 or 5 times a year. My doc said this was normal from being on the pill, but in the last year thought it strange i still didnt have a regular cycle so decided to probe further into it. Have balloned in weight. Was 10 stone when i was 17. At 23, im now 14 stone and getting heavier. Also have developed really hairy parts. So went off for various tests and last week was finally diagnosed with PCOS, however i had suspected that i had it for years.
Worst thing about PCOS: My weight problem - i dont know is it my diet or the PCOS that is making me fatter and fatter.
Medication used: Nothing.
NHS or Private: Private. Pretty cheesed off to be honest. Have spent about €800 so far just to be told that i have PCOS and thats where it stopped. Went to an endrocronoglogist first who said i didnt have it. He then sent me to a gyno who clearly showed me that i had from an ultra sound type device. No support or advice thou on what i do next. Doc just said if i wanted children id need to take hormones and that is it. Was booted out of the clinic none the wiser. So i feel at a bit of a loss - who do i turn to now? Do i just ignore the syndrome til i want to get pregnant?
Action taken against PCOS: Nothing.
PM or Email?: Both please. Support would be great. Just to know that there are other peolpe out there in the same boat. Its nice too that there is an Irish/UK element to this site as there does not seem to be any support facilities or groups in Ireland. My email is sineadbowen@o2.ie
Any other information: Nope. Think that is it. But i would like to hear from other Irish people in particular to hear their stories and how the medical profession are dealing with them.

Another Dublin girl...welcome.

Sinead, you most definitely DO NOT wait til you want to get pregnant before doing something about your PCOS. Read up on it and then go and discuss management of PCOS with your doc. Just go armed with info cos alot of the time they don't know the ins and outs of it.

Red face

But is there a nead for me to be treated for it?

Do you know the implications if i leave it untreated? I just dont like the thought of taking a hole load of medication that may mess me up in other ways?
