Hi, girls! Nice to meet you all!

Name: Nat

Age: 23 (nearly 24)

Family Situation: Married for 3 years to Simon. No children, 3 cats.

PCOS Symptoms: Excess hair and weight.

Worst thing about PCOS: Excess facial hair is not nice, I spend half an hour (at least!) everyday to tweeze it. :-( And I've put on nearly 30kg in 2 years! Very difficult to loose them. Depression, fatigue, constant sleepiness. No period after started taking Cyproterone Acetate in August after being diagnosed with PCOS.

Meds used: Dianette (used as BCP as not planning to have kids yet), Metformin 500mg twice daily.

NHS/Private: Private. Thanks God it's medical insurance . I know my GP would not be helpful. Was diagnosed with PCOS when went to see a urogynaecologist at Bupa about my urinary tract problem.

Action Taken: Try to eat low carb and low fat foods. Trying to follow Weight Watchers plan as well.

PM or E-mail: Either.

Name: Chez (Its actually Cheryl lol but nobody calls me that unless its my bank calling or they're mad at me! hehe )

Age: 24

Family situation: Single living with my sister aged 19 and her BF aged 21 in my parents house... ironically they've moved out!

About me: I'm un-employed atm but should be starting work at Royal Mail in the next week or 2. I am also signing up to join the Samaritans. I'm single and if my PCOS doesn't put men off my collection of unusual pets will hehe - I keep Snakes, Scorpions and Spiders aswell as standard Furries and Chickens, I guess I'm quite animal mad!

PCOS Symptoms: Excess hair, Excess weight, Excess tiredness... possible Sleep Apnea.

Worst thing about PCOS: The excess tiredness... if I had more energy the weight would be easy to lose.... the Excess hair really isn't that bad and can be removed or disguised easily!

Medication used: Dianette and Standard Contraceptive Pill have been used in the past now I use nothing!

NHS/Private: NHS but I haven't been for atleast 2years as they were quite ignorant to my plight and I have found better ways to control the bulk of my PCOS symptoms.

Action Taken: Dianette and Contraceptive Pill but they didn't work and played havoc with my migraines (I suffer from those enough without the Pill). Drank Aloe Vera every morning for 12 months 2003-2004... it regulated my Periods if nothing else. Late last year I began laser therapy for the excess hair on my face... I may get the rest of my body done but atm the excess hair elsewhere doesn't bother me. July 2004 till now I've lost about 70lbs and I'm feeling great... I would like to lose another 20-30lbs but as it stands I am happy with what I have achieved and I am in no rush to shift it.

PM or Email: Which ever suits you best you can also catch me on Msn messenger: ciryl2hot4u@hotmail.com I am on there often!

Any other information: NHS could be more supportive. My PCOS symptoms used to be alot worse than they are now... now I have the majority of them under control no thanks to the NHS! There should be more boards like this... and there should be better support in the UK for PCOS sufferers... it took me 5years to find this and boy has it opened my eyes!

Name: Corinne

Age: 22

Family situation: Single. Living in a shared house in Sheffield. Came here for uni and just didn't want to leave!!

About me: Finished a psychology degree last year and about to start working as a management assistant in a NHS mental health trust.

PCOS Symptoms: Too much hair, overweight, some depression, tiredness.

Worst thing about PCOS: Used to say the hair but that's got better, so I'm gonna go with the weight.

Medication used: Metformin, Yasmin and Finasteride (used to decrease testosterone, generally in men with prostate problems. Yes, I get a funny look from the pharmacist when I get my prescription, especially as it says in big red letters on the box, "for use in men only", because of the damage it can cause to a male baby)

NHS/Private: NHS but if I had the money I would go private, I hate having to fight for things. Apparently my doctor thinks that 2 months of pelvic pain (now up to 4) is not worth investigating further.

Action Taken: Above medication, gyming whenever I can be bothered or when I'm not feeling to rubbish to go (I've been very good this last 2 weeks, yay me!!)

PM or Email: Whichever, my e-mail is madness_01_2000@yahoo.com

Any other information: No, I think that's it. I just wanted to add my voice to the fact that dealing with the NHS is well, like this...

Coz, I had exactly the same reaction when I was first prescribed Cyproterone Acetate. It wasn't funny as I first thought "Is my Dr mad?" Cyproterone acetate actually stopped my periods so I am off it now. Hopefully my periods will start again. Sorry for a bit of off topic.

My consultant explained why he was going to prescribe me this but my GP was dubious but not as bad as the pharmacist who looked at the packet and then back at the prescription a few times before disappearing into the back for about ten minutes checking the BNF and other reference books. And then he gave me the third degree about it, why had I been prescribed it, who by etc etc. I thought I was never going to get the meds!!

Name: Veronika

Age: 22 (23 in 2 months, how scary)

Family situation: married for 15 months to the love of my life

About me: I am actually austrian but I came to live here 2 years ago, since my DH and I got married and we decided to start together in the UK. We may be moving back to Austria in a few years though. I am a student, studying in Bristol for a Degree in Sociology and Spanish.
I would love to have children in the future and never thought conceiving would be an issue.

PCOS Symptoms: Overweight, Hairy (I call myself little monkey ), Abdominal Pain, Constant Tiredness, unable to lose weight, etc

Worst thing about PCOS: being tired all the time, having pain in my abdomen (surely I cannot have PMS ALL the time?!), being overweight, having to watch what you eat all the time, excess hair in my face, arms, belly, back, legs ... E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E. ....... and the infertility.

Medication used: I just started on Met (1500mg) and I'm taking Celest as well as Vitamin B12

NHS/Private: NHS - but I am so shocked about the health system here. I finally found a nice GP (who is male!), who really listens and seems to take me seriously, he is the one who diagnosed me with PCOS 4 weeks ago. Before I went to female GP's who were completely ingnorant, arrogant and jdfhsjk#@@$£*hdjd

PM or Email: PM please!!!

Any other information: I feel really ridiculous being so tired and groggy all the time, I hope this will get better! I will take up some swimming and walking as soon as I'm out of the vicious cycle of being too tired of being tired.............

Name: Melissa

Age: 29

Family situation: lovely boyfriend who's very supportive

About me: Australian living in London for 5 years, PCOS and underactive thyroid. I have two older sisters with PCOS, one has an underactive thyroid.

PCOS Symptoms: bad acne (which makes me depressed), tired all the time, hair loss, periods going from 28 days to 50 days and no period ranging from 4 - 7 months each time I come off the pill, some excess hair on my face.

The worst thing about PCOS: looking like a acne ridden teenager at 29! Having bad bouts of hair loss (my hair got very very thin a few years ago), moodiness from the pill, too tired to go out with my friends.

Medication used: everything for my acne including Dianette, acne antibiotics, Accutane,
N Lite Laser (don't try this one it doesn't work and is expensive) and various creams from doctor and dermatologist. The only thing that works for my acne is Dianette. Just started Dianette again after an 18 month break. I'd like to try Met but my doctor says I have to be overweight for him to pescribe it for me.

NHS or Private: My doctor on the NHS isn't very good in London so I asked him for a referral to a Dermatologist. He said no b/c the NHS is so over stretched, so I'm seeing one privately. It's expensive, but the creams the Derm is giving me are working and she's doing some peels to help reduce acne scarring. I find the NHS isn't very good for treating PCOS. I was diagonosed in Australia at 23 and was given very good care from my doctor and referred to see a good Gyno who explained everything to me.

Family situationLong term partner Mike, and son, Oskar who will be 2 in feb.
PCOS symptoms No periods for 5 years. I was just diagnosed with pco and a week later found out I was pregnant. I put on 4 stone in 11months and that was how I found out I had pco.
Worst thing about PCOSWeight and the useless doctors who tell you to "eat less cakes"
Medication used I was taking metformin for a while but I stopped because I'm still breastfeeding my boy. I'm still waiting for an alternative.
Nhs or Private Nhs but getting nowhere. My last appointment was on tuesday this week, where I was told for the third time "Its PCOS that you've got" and then the gynae discharged me from clinic saying there was nothing he could do. ( Reason for my depression this week)
Action takenI'm on a carb lowered diet. (off my own back)
