I want to start a support group for those of you based in London, perhaps we could all go for a meal once a fortnight/month and Ill happily arrange all the meet ups. Anyone keen to join the London PCOS support/social group? be a great way to vent/share/support others that often feel isolated due to this condition. I know I feel really isolated sometimes. Please email me kelly@dentalangels.co.uk if you wish to join!! I read the other day that support groups can increase fertility by 25% - Im willing to give it a go!! Hope all you lovely UK ladies are having a positive PCOS day out there xxx Kelly

Default 23 with one PCOS ovary...

Name Lydia
Age 23
Family situation In a relationship, no children.

PCOS symptoms

My mum has PCOS, but although I could have slightly painful or heavy periods they have always been very regular, I have had a period every month since I started. I have a BMI of 22, but I can suffer from spots (but I have other unrelated skin issues too)...So I didn't think I had it.

Then Jan last year I was admitted to hospital with suspected appendicitis due to extreme abdominal pain, which actually turned out to be that I had a dermoid cyst that had consumed my left ovary and was now the size of a grapefruit (lovely). I had that removed so I only have one ovary left, which has left me worried now about damaging it!

Anyway while they were inside looking at my appendix with a camera, they also noticed that I had PCOS on my right ovary! They took photos so I've seen a colour photo of my ovary & cysts (ovaries are bright purple if anyone is interested).

I still have regular periods, and having one ovary hasnt affected my cycle much at all, it has just made them slightly lighter which I think is a good thing, and I now get less pain.

Worst thing about PCOS Well having one ovary with PCOS I'm most bothered about not being able to concieve. Although my gynae said that I should have no problem as my mum has PCOS and had me and becoz i have regular periods...but when I registered with a new GP I told the practice nurse about it and she was like 'oh you cant have kids with PCOS' which was not only untrue but actually really upset me!

Medication used I havent used any, as I have no problematic symptoms. This means though that i'm scared to take oral contraception/ implant/ injections in case I affect things, so rely on condoms. Would be interested to know of good contraception to take if you dont want to mess up your cycle too much and would be able to have kids in the future?

NHS or Private NHS - I discussed my PCOS with a brilliant lady gynae who was operating to remove my other ovary.

Action taken against PCOS None yet!Apart from my mum reguarly telling me not to worry about infertility with PCOS as Posh spice has it and she's had 3 kids lol...

Anything else?

Just interested in other people's stories! Think this is actually a really common condition and women need to be able to discuss it more openly, big praise to this site!

PCOS symptoms

Weight problems, Heavy/light irregular/no periods at times, excess hair (really annoying)

Worst thing about PCOS My weight but I think I'm just too lazy to diet coz I just love my food, I have lost weight in the past but Ive put it all back on... and extra!
Also not knowing when my next period is or being on my period for ages!!!
I deal with the excess hair by plucking or waxing (I'm a qualified Beauty Therapist so that comes in handy for waxing myself lol)

Medication used (Same as above poster) I haven't used any. This means though that I'm scared to take oral contraception/ implant/ injections in case it affect things, so rely on condoms. Would be interested to know of good contraception to take if you don't want to mess up your cycle too much and would be able to have kids in the future?

NHS or Private Only my doctor knows.

Action taken against PCOS None, does the pill make periods regular?

Anything else?

Yeah, how can I tell my mum I have PCOS? I was diagnosed in March 2008 and I was gonna tell her at the time when I went for my Ultrasound scan but was too embarrassed (I know I shouldn't of been) so my bf come with me.
I really do want to tell her but I'm just scared, not of how she's gonna react (I think she'd be understanding) just I don't like all the questions she'd be asking like, when did you find out? who did you go with why didn't you tell me etc etc, I think that stresses me out most lol.

lynda- welcome to sc glad your gynae is so good.
jayney - i can understand how you feel about telling your mum. Could you show her a book/or this website if you feel you cant get the words right to explain about pcos yourself. Thats what i did at first - lent my mum a book about pcos.

Hi, I'm Ashley and I'm 21. I just got diagnosed on Wednesday so very new here. A bit confused and worried at the moment and trying to work out whether it would be best to TTC now or later, and looking at some ways to regulate and control some of my symptoms.

PCOS symptoms

Can't keep my weight down - possibly most of thats my fault! Have excess hair on my face and I have nightmare periods. No periods for 6 months then bleed heavily for 4 weeks. Also have depressive personality - I am sure this is linked to PCOS as well.

Worst thing about PCOS
Probably my worry about conceiving. Wasn't actually a problem last time but I am fairly convinced that was a magical wonderful fluke. But day to day its my weight. My periods kept under control ATM with the pill but they're a nightmare normally. They get better the skinnier I am but losing weight is tough tough tough.

Medication used
I am on the combined pill. I find it works well for me and keeps periods nice and regular and light. It also keeps my hair growth under control. In order to conceive I didn't need medical intervention (even though I was told I would do). I lost 20 lbs, took prenatal vits and vit B to support my luteal phase (I spot in my 2 ww due to low progesterone) and ate like a GI goddess. God how I hate seeds now......

NHS or Private
NHS all the way. We are too poor for anything else ;-)

Action taken against PCOS
Weight loss - hate to say it but it really helped me. I went to weight watchers and put a GI slant on it if you get what I mean. I also am on the pill as I hate my normal unpredictable periods.
Anything else?
Don't give up on TTC ladies. It will happen. I was told I would need help and 10 days lated I fell PG with DD.

Smile Hello

Hi,

I'm a total newbie to PCOS and also the forum, or in fact any forum. I was diagnosed a couple of months ago, after not having a period for 16 months. Doc stuck me on the contraceptive pill but to be honest I'm not feeling the love for it. In fact I think it's giving me the other symptoms of PCOS, such as weight gain which I didn't have before.
Does anyone know any natural remedies for the condition?

Look forward to chatting with you all.

X

Unhappy

Hi, i'm Victoria from Bristol in the southwest of the UK, originally from wiltshire.
I'm 24, was diagnosed feb 2009 after TTC for 7 months and periods stopping completely.
I was put on met but became quite nauseous and irritable so am now on glucophage slow release and all ok.
I have a few friends who are pregnant, one after ttc for less than 2 months and in all honesty the way they rub it in and now talk to me in a patronising way is really hurting me.
I feel quite lost and alone, but my mum and hubby 2 be are amazing but wish they could feel what I feel. I'm scared of the unknown, I know it's stupid but please don't think i've not tried to tell myself this! I would really appreciate some friendly advice and comforting words.
My weight is normal, i'm healthy and active and excersize as often as I can, but not obsessively!
