Unhappy Ultrasound Results... ???

Hi ladies!

Just got my ultrasound results back & thought I'd start a fresh thread (don't know how many still check my previous thread). I just got a letter in the mail today & have to say I'm more confused than I thought I'd be. I'll be calling my doc tomorrow but don't know how soon I'll actually get to talk to him. I thought in the meantime you cysters could give me some input.

Here's what the letter said:
"The ultrasound showed prominent follicles, more on the left than the right. This would be consistent with polycystic ovaries."
... does this mean PCOS? Or not necessarily?

"We could consider post ovulatory progesterone to help you with cycle regulation..."
... even with charting I can't always identify ovulation & he says he's not sure if I even ovulate so how could I do a post ovulatory treatment? How would they know when to give me treatment during a 100 day cycle?

"... if you decide you want to get pregnant, we could do serial ultrasounds with ovulation induction, if desired."
... I don't really see the need for more ultrasounds - I'm going to look this one up for further info.

That is it. I don't know how I feel about this right now, esp since AF is giving me trouble(sometimes I just hate her ). I know these questions are best answered by my doc, but just thought I'd reach out for some input from my cysters. I'll prob be researching all night myself! This all seems so new even though I've been reading so much about PCOS... I feel like I was going to be better prepared for the results.

Thanks for your support ladies!

I think they are saying that yes, the similarities point towards PCOS.

"We could consider post ovulatory progesterone to help you with cycle regulation..."
hmm, maybe they mean they will induce your af w/ prog?? Not sure about that one.
"... if you decide you want to get pregnant, we could do serial ultrasounds with ovulation induction, if desired."
if they are inducing O, they would like to moniter you with u/s. Which to me is a good idea. If you are taking something like a trigger shot you need to see when to take it buy u/s

Hugs, its hard to understand all the mumbo jumbo at times.

Thanks Julieh!

The confusing thing is that I have some very long cycles (longest 103 days) but usually they are around 41 days. The last two were actually 32 & 31 days & the 32 day looked like there was ovulation based on my temps. My doc said that it looks like I may have low fertility with occasional ovulation but not necessarily infertile. He suggested before that it might be possible to conceive naturally but now it sounds like he thinks it wouldn't... could this be b/c of all the cysts they found? My more important concern right now is my other symptoms which leave me sick & exhausted almost daily.

So, I guess I'm just confused why he wouldn't just put me on Met or a simpler standard treatment first to see if it straightened everything out - ovulation & symptoms. He also didn't say anything about doing tests for IR, diabetes, or other related probs. I love this doc but maybe I'll need to see a PCOS doc if I can find one. It just seems like this suddenly got so complicated.

What kind of dr are you seeing? I would see a endo or reproductive endo. The first thing they will do is get all the correct tests ran. And that is so important to see where you are. You could be IR and really benefit from met, but if they dont test, they wont know. I would really try to get in to someone more experienced.

"The ultrasound showed prominent follicles, more on the left than the right. This would be consistent with polycystic ovaries."

Ovaries should normally show one dominant follice when you ovulate each month so that means the left ovary looked more polycystic than the right but it doesn't state that the right was not polycystic.

"We could consider post ovulatory progesterone to help you with cycle regulation..."
... even with charting I can't always identify ovulation & he says he's not sure if I even ovulate so how could I do a post ovulatory treatment? How would they know when to give me treatment during a 100 day cycle?

That is a GREAT question for your dr and I would be curious to know the answer. He would have to find some kind of way to get your cycles regulated.

"... if you decide you want to get pregnant, we could do serial ultrasounds with ovulation induction, if desired."
... I don't really see the need for more ultrasounds - I'm going to look this one up for further info.

Serial u/s are usu done while you are on some sort of fertility meds like Clomid or injectibles so they can see if the meds are working. For the injectibles they need to know how the follies are growing and see if you need more or see if you are hyperstimulating and need less or need to cancel the cycle.

I agree with Julieh that you would probably benefit from seeing an endocrinologist or a reproductive endocrinologist. When I got on met it helped with alot of my other symptoms as well. Keep us posted!

Jenny darlin',

You sweet, sweet honey...I am praying for you!!!

I ditto what Julieh said about finding a RE or normal endo...I had no clue that you were right in the 'middle' of all of this. Also, I encourage you to listen to your heart/intuition...if you don't like the treatment a doc suggests and know better from what you have learned at sc...find another doc. I mean no disrespect to doctors but they have NO IDEA what it's like living in your skin everyday...It took me three docs before one gave me Met (it worked wonders on normalizing my cycles...) my charts are just fascinating to look at before Met and after.

Thanks ladies! The doc I'm seeing now is a family doc & he was the first doc to ever actually take my charting seriously(that's why he started testing... long cycles & poor thermal shift, low bts). He is an NFP only doc so I don't have to worry about him pushing bcps. He was also the first doc to actually explain everything to me & take time with me instead of shoving me out the door. I've been to so many terrible... really TERRIBLE... docs that I can't stand the thought of having to find a new one! But, I know I might have to if this doc isn't too great with the PCOS stuff. I am so frustrated!! I just want to get better!!

I'll update this thread as soon as I talk to my doc & get more info. Hopefully it won't confuse me more! I know my cysters are here for me though... Thanks A Million!!

Jenny~ Keep in mind too that you can keep this dr and see the other for PCOS related things. I only see my endo a few times a year to get a check up, labs and go over everything. endo's are specialists and dont have to take the place of your GP or GYN. GL to you!

Yep, I agree with the other poster. U/s are very helpful to make sure that your follicles are growing enough and that you're ovulating. It can help you time bd better and personally gives me piece of mind that everything's going the way it should.
