Default umbilical cord deaths

My question is If the Doctor said a baby died from the umbilical cord being around his shoulder shouldnt the baby come out with the umbilical cord still around his shoulder??when the baby came out the doctor tryed to block us from seeing the baby.but we got to see him anyway and the umbilical cord wasnt wrap around ANY part of his body. Now dont that seems like alittle foul play??????

I am sorry for your loss, was this your baby? It's hard to lose a baby, and even harder if the reason it happened isn't very clear.

The umbilical cord doesn't have to be wrapped around the shoulders or part of the body to be pinched, and stop the blood flow through the cord. It can be just looped up around, or next to the shoulder. That loop of the cord could have been trapped between the shoulder, and the birth canal, which would have pinched off the blood flow through the cord.

It might have also been a loop of cord that got "kinked" as it looped up by the shoulders.

Any kinks in the cord, or the cord being compressed between the baby and the birth canal would become unkinked, or uncompressed when the baby comes out of the birth canal. The doc might have seen the loop of the cord up by the shoulder when the baby was coming out. Doing labs on the baby's blood, like blood gasses, and pH might help to explain what had happened.

Usually the main concern about the cord being "wrapped around" would be if the cord was wrapped around the neck. In that case, the blood flow through the cord is not cut off, but the cord is cutting off the blood supply from the baby's heart to the baby's brain.

I hope you can get the answers you are looking for.

So sorry for your loss. I have not experienced an umbilical cord death, but I have experienced a full term loss. Just wanted to give you hugs....

Many hugs coming your way! I agree with Cara, the cord can have trouble getting flow for several different reasons. It sounds like your doctor hasn't dealt with loss before, because parents should always spend time with their baby when they just have that one chance. I'm very sorry about that. Did you name your son? I am so sorry about your loss!

I am so, so sorry. I have no clue about umbilical cord losses, but I am so sad that you lost your sweet boy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The UC could have had a tiny knot or a kink in it to cause problems. Not saying that was what it was but there is that possibility
