Question Unconvincing appointment- left me confused! Help!

Hi all-
I had an appointment with a GYN to follow up on all my labs and ultrasound. My PCP diagnosed me based on my symptoms, and an LH/FSH ratio of greater than 3 and my free testosterone was a little high... So GYN took history, tooked at my labs, ultrasound, did an exam (so did his intern ) and then he said clinically I was diagnosed with PCOS. But that my testosterone really wasn't that high, and my symptoms weren't that bad (some hair on my chin; anthancosis nigricans around neck, braline, near vagina; obesity (around my middle); no period since February and irregular periods my whole life; high cholesterol) and it should get better on the pill if I wanted to go on it, or if ttc then Met. I said I didn't want to ttc right away, wanted to lose some weight, get healthy (and I'm also in a career transition), so that was it. He gave a prescription for progesterone to induce AF and then BCP...

Is it really that simple?! He did order DHEA blood test and fasting glucose/insulin again. He didn't address lifestyle changes, or an endo, or anything! PCP and see him in 3 months.

Is there such a thing as a "little" PCOS? That's kinda like he sounded. Like I could barely "meet the criteria"....

I don't know I'm disheartened and confused! I "liked" having a name for what is going on with me! I was hoping everything was coming together and I could finally get on the right track... and I don't know.

I don't know what to think....

Any advice?! (please!)

I only had infrequent ovulation, high LH:FSH ratio, and recent weight gain (at the time of Dx) and was Dx'd just on that - all other labs were normal, so definitely what you would consider a "mild" case. I'm on Met for maintenance now, though, not BCPs (actually we are ttc now, but wasn't when I went on it).

Some think BCPs are not the way to go, but they worked fine for me and kept the weight off for the 10 years I was on them, so I think it depends on the person.

Sounds like your doc is pretty well informed, though.

If you have specific questions, just shoot!

PCOS, being a syndrome, is all about the symptoms. Some women have a lot of symptoms, some women have very few. Like you, I have some very mild symptoms (only a little excess hair, overweight but not obese, slight AN, borderline IR, etc.) but that doesn't mean I don't have PCOS by any definition! Don't I wish!

I currently use just BCPs and vitamins/diet to control my symptoms as well. At the very least, consider it a blessing that you don't have to deal with some of the more heartbreaking symptoms or a lot of medication and treatment.
