Anyone have under arm brown spots? I have tried lotion and an assortment of different deoderant. They have been around for about the last 3 years or so. Any thoughts? Ideas? Oh and they do not hurt or anything...

I am sure it's caused by insulin resistance. If you get that under control they should go away. I have brown marks on my knuckles. That's how my specialist found I'm IR. I did the sugar test three times and it came back normal. Apparently the blood test only finds 20% of IR cases. Brown marks are a good indicator of it.
Cheers,
Suzan

It's called acanthosis nigricans. It is almost always indicates insulin resistance. Some people get it on the back of their neck, elbows, knees and groin. Google on it and you'll find plenty of information on it.
I had the very same thing and also it around my neck. It looked like it was dirty all the time. My endo said she had never seen someone with those that did NOT have IR. So she put me on met and i've been on it 6 months and they are pretty much gone! So getting the IR undercontrol should help eliminate them. I used to refuse to wear tanktops...not because of my flabby arms but because my armpits always looked dirty/hairy when they weren't!

I feel the same way about tank tops PLUS it is almost pool season! I just started Met again in March so maybe that will help with them.

I've had darkened arm-pits since puberty actually and have NEVER worn tank tops - no, seriously. After I found out I had PCOS I just assumed that I would always have them but this is the first time I heard someone mention that Metformin could help get rid of it.
I was on the bench about the whole Met thing but this post has just convinced me. I'm calling my gyn. today!

The ring around my neck has pretty much gone away but after reading this post yesterday I looked at my armpits last night. They are still brown but a MUCH lighter brown. So I really do think it helps! I was told that when I got my IR undercontrol that these would start to disappear. It's been so nice, especially the one around my neck. I used to ALWAYS wear a necklace due to this.
I always ahd probelms with the dark skin patches acanthosis nigracans and used to scrub my knees and neck as it always looked dirty, my knuckles too. It is a clear sign of insulin resistance and the pancreas workng overtime to produce the insulin.
There are a few treatments for delaing with Acanthosis Nigracans such as ointments, corticosteroid creams and retinoids but, it seems the most effective treatment has been loweing the IR with medications and lifestyle changes.
Best of Luck!!!

Yep my skin is darker in my armpits and between my legs (upper thigh area)...doctor says its all due to IR and PCOS, once weight loss happens and medicines kick in it should start to lighten a lot. good luck!

No BCP. No Met. No Meds at all.
I have the dark circles around my neck and underarms. I also thought it was dirt. I use to scub my neck because it was dirty. I were tank tops but I don't raise my arms up though. LOL. I thought it was hair that I couldnt remove from under my arms when I shaved.
I never realized they were connected. I have had this for years and years. You would think a doctor would have made the connection when I was a teenager...I have had physicals since I was 15 years old! I do take Met already so hopefully the dusky skin will fade back to normal one day.
I have brown spots on my hands, neck, groin/inner thighs, arm pits, in between my breasts, back of my ankles, and in between my fat rolls and i'm insulin resistant. Metformin DEFINANTLY helps them. My hands are still pretty bad, but my groin area, arm pits, and neck have improved tremendously!
