Default Underactive Thyroid - Help?

Hi everyone.. Today my endo had me have my blood drawn to see how my thyroid is.. Over the summer it was tested, and I don't know technical terms, but she explaied it like this "the hormone (or whatever it is) that tells your thyroid to work was coming up really high on the tests, while what was recorded for my thyroid was VERY low, like almost too low"
SO I should know in a week how it is.. At first she said I could go on meds for it but since she said I would have to be on it forever and the fact that I didn't need to go on them right then scared me, I said I'd wait. I don't know if she cheked it last time but today I had labs drawn.. But I dont know if I should go on meds.. I am very tired all the time, and 20lbs overweight.. I know those can have sooo many causes but I was also told the meds might help me lose weight..
I am thinking if she says I can choose this time to go on meds I will, hoping I will not be as tired.. this is awful, I am not even 20 yet (well, I will be in a month!) and feel exhausted all the time!

Beth,

I know this is a scary time, but you're on the right track! Medications that supplement thyroid hormones have been around for a very long time and are very safe. Don't be scared of them -- they're likely to make you feel A LOT better.

TSH is the hormone that works like a thermostat for your thyroid. If your body senses there's not enough thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), it turns up the TSH. That's why yours was high.

T3 and T4 are the hormones produced by your body in response to TSH. Right now, your poor thyroid can't pump out enough on its own to keep up with demand, which is why you need medication.

I'd recommend starting out with Synthroid and having all your levels checked again T3, T4 and TSH in 2-3 months. Synthroid does an excellent job of regulating these hormones for most people, and I'm betting you'll start feeling a lot better.

Default Hey

I would have your Dr fax/mail you the exact test results...then you can compare...I got a TSH of 4 (normal range) a yr and a half ago and now mines at 8.9 . I just started meds synthroid 3 days ago and have notcied a huge enery difference. It may be worth your while to get everyhting tested now..expecially if your still on your parents insurance and money is an issue (I'm 22)

I hope i helped
Ashley
