Default United Healthcare and acupuncture

Has anyone successfully gotten United Healthcare to pay for acupuncture? My plan (DH - federal employee) will only pay for it if it is for anesthesia or pain relief. If so how did you do it?

I got United Healthcare to pay 70% of my acupuncture for about 6 months. After the months, I was finally preganant but then lost the pregnancy and I haven't been back to acupuncture since this happened. I'm sure UHC would pay for it again if I asked. I went for acupuncture twice a week, and paid for acupuncture upfront and then UHC reimbursed me. They were awful about reimbursement and I needed to call them CONSTANTLY to remind them to pay me back. But I still got the money.

My UHC plan said that acupuncture was 100% covered if administered by a medical doctor. However, there weren't any medical doctor's within a 50 mile radius who were also doctors of acupuncture. That was my argument with UHC, so they agreed to pay for it as "out of network", which is the 70% reimbursement.

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

It usually depends if his employer covers it under the plan its not up to the insurance since they just administer the plan.
