Unpasturized honey. Is it really something I need to avoid?
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find the info I'm looking for.
I'm wondering about unpasturized honey. DH bought some the other day, without knowing that it should be pasturized. It wasn't a big deal because I don't normally use honey, but I feel like I'm catching a cold or the flu, and I'd like some camomille tea which I generally drink with honey. Is a spoonful of unpasturized honey really that bad? Is this something I shouldn't risk at all? I seem to recall someone saying that they'd accidently been drinking unpasturized milk, and people told her it should be okay.
Thoughts?
TIA!

I don't think a spoonful will do you any harm, but personally I would try to steer clear from anything unpasteurized. It's just not worth any potential harm IMO. That being said, I have had a hot dog and some smoked salmon cream cheese during my pregnancy and both are no nos.
I read that the nitrates in hot dogs should be avoided. They say not to eat them more than once a month. I guess it depends on how strict you want to be. I ate a kosher one at Costco and it was steaming hot so I figured it was ok.
I'd rather be safe than sorry with the honey, you don't want something getting passed to the baby that could harm it. You could use sugar instead, or a little maple syrup.

Thanks, everyone! I've asked DH to pick up some regular, pasturized honey on his way home. Fortunately I don't have a sore throat (just aches and a headache) so I can live without it if he can't get any. Thank God I can still take Tylenol!

Nitrates are eeeeeeevil!
Don't know about unpasturized honey, but I would avoid it. I'm paranoid that way. If I ate it, I would obsess about it till my kid was 18, as I watched for some unpasturized honey induced illness to come along and destroy all of our lives. But as I mentioned in a previous post, I'm psycho.

You and me both! LOL! We don't eat meat, so at least I don't have to worry about the hotdog thing too!

Unpasturized honey and even regular honey is really only dangerous to infants due to rare case of botulism. Honey contains antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and you get more of these properties when the honey is not all heated up and cooked out. So germs cannot really thrive in that type of environment, unlike cheese and milk. Honey has been found in ancient Egyptian burial tombs (before pasturization) and still had all its active properties and in good condition.
Also keep in mind you are putting it in hot tea which would also kill any germs if, big if, they are in there. Honey in the raw form also contains propolis which is another big-time germ killer which will be healing to your sore throat! So IMHO as one who has been studying all things natural for years, it is safe and I still use it.
