Default Untreated Hypo and Pregnancy? - Please Advise

I am currently 8+wks pregnant. My latest health insurance only started a week ago and due to zero cash flow, I was unable to afford the TSH test my GP insisted on for me to get a Synthroid refill (I owed the local lab money to begin with). I was tested on 12/9 and found out 12/13 that my TSH was 7.1!

I'm really worried about the potential effect on the pregnancy and the baby. It seems like I'm pushing all of this on my ob (whom I will not get to see until 1/3 - all treatment thusfar has been through her nurse). I insisted on getting a TSH test, was not notified immediately of the results (so I kept asking for them), and insisted on getting my prescription written. I don't think the nurse is familiar with hypothyroid problems in pregnancy.

Instead of the graduating dose I've been familiar with over the years (.05 first week, .1 second week, .15 third week, etc until testing reveals proper levels) I'm expected to be at .05mg for a month, when my TSH is way high to begin with! Is is just me, or is this treatment not aggressive enough?

What should I do? I've been taking the .05mg dose since Saturday. Should I:

- remain on .05mg until Jan 3rd doctor appt (18 days away!)
- take .05 for week 1 and then increase to .10 (2 pills) until 1/3
- go all the way up to .15 a week at a time
- insist on getting an answer from my ob herself
- find a way to see an endocrinologist (which I've never seen)

I'm tempted to go with #2, simply because I want to follow instructions, yet I'm really scared about the m/c risk. I've printed out a few things off the Net about m/c and iq studies, which I will see if my ob knows anything about.

Any feedback is very appreciated!

First of all - CONGRATULATIONS!!! How wonderful.

Secondly - sorry, I can't help you out. I'm new to all of this. Maybe post this over on the pregnancy board?? It might get more attention and someone there may have been through the same thing.

Good luck. H&H 9 months!

hi
for what its worth while i was pg, my dd is only 3 months old now, I had my TSH checked monthly My dose was raised monthly some months I didn't need it raised but toward my eighth month I had to go from 150 to 200, My dr told me that my baby would get ever thing the baby needed before I would get any thyroid because your body will do without in order for the baby to get what it needs, If you are really concerned express your feelings I would contact your gp or tell your OB your feelings on this, can you schedule an appt to talk with nurse and or OB now? if not talk to them on the phone and express your feelings it is YOUR body and YOUR baby. Good Luck and If you need to talk your welcome to email me at safar@ucom.net
CONGRATS on your Pregnancy I wish you a very happy and Healthy 9 months
