I finally have a little news on my foster-to-adopt situation. I just called the caseworker who has my application. He said that the next training session will start sometime in February but he's not quite sure when yet. He said they would schedule a home visit right before the training so they could look at our house (I guess for safety issues) and we could meet with him and one of the trainers and could ask questions. He said he would call me back as soon as he knows when the training starts. So, hopefully I will get to start the process in about a month.
Now my question for you that have been through this, what types of things will they look for at this initial visit? I'd like to get a head start on things if I can.

we didnt start the homestudy till after our classes, but i am thinking they may want to do a prescreen of your house? He sounds like a reasonable person, why dont you ask him. good luck!!

The DHS here does a home inspection first before starting the homestudy to drop off the homestudy application, and to do a "safety walkthrough" of the home.
She said that they're looking for things that are unsatisfactory, such as large holes in the floor or other poor living conditions (or potential ones) that need to be corrected, to give you enough time to do so before a child comes into your home.
We live in Ohio and basically did a foster to adopt ourselves. We were allowed to start the classes and complete the application before the caseworker came to the house. I was a nervous wreck and cleaned the entire house even teh garage and basement. She hardly looked at anything. I thought there would be a white glove test and was willing to open closest to show her everything. She was just looking to make sure that we had a clean safe living environment. It was a lot easier than I expected. Even now when the caseworkes come to check up on the kids each month they cant believe how nice the house still looks (we are adopting a 2, 3 and 4 year old sibling group). Of course I think its a mess because there are always toys around, the bathroom is constantly being used, and there is always laundry here or there.
Thanks for the advice. I finally received a letter that the classes will start next week with an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 8th. They have changed the way they do a few things and our first home meeting won't be until after classes start.
