Thumbs up Update-Is she too young for PCOS?

I called the doctor's office on Wednesday and told them I wanted my daughter tested for PCOS. She told me a nurse would call me back. Well the doctor called me last night. He was wonderful. He told me that he has done extensive research on PCOS because his daugher has PCOS. I was so relieved to hear that he is aware of PCOS. I have found that a lot of doctors don't know much about it. He has her scheduled for a blood test on Monday. If she does have it, I feel more at ease because he seems very knowledgeable about it. I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks for all the responses!

Kathy

Kathy, when you talked to the doctor about you thinking your daughter had PCOS.... what did you basically say to them? Should I just talk to my endocrinologist about it? My daughter just turned 9 and needs a bra already (no hair as of yet) She has a chubby belly too. (not big anywhere else) I would hate her to go through this too.

i was just going to ask the same question. what kind of doctor did you call? a general practioner, ob gyn or endicrinologist? i made a startling discovery this morning. my 9 yr old was in the bathtub and asked me to look at a bug bite and i noticed she's got some sparse hair on her girly parts. she's the chubby one with the chubby belly (she also has "dirty neck syndrome" & breasts). later in the day i asked my 10 yr old (she'll be 11 in august) if she had hair on her girly parts and she said yes. she's a little chubby (with breasts too) but not as chubby as her little sister and has a little tiny mustache which i've always attributed to her having dark hair.

hubby and i were talking about it and we definitely think we need to consult a doctor...but which one? hubby says there's some medicine out that can delay puberty in really young girls. he also said something about how cow's milk is so loaded with some growth hormone that that could be the reason the girls have breasts and hair. i don't know..

but i'm definitely the doc on monday...which one...i don't know...lol

Hi everyone. I'm 16 now and I was diagnosed when I was 14.

I had the same signs, symptoms whatever you want to call them that you guys have been mentioning when I was 9. However, all women in my family tend to develop early so I don't know if it had to do with the PCOS or just genetics.
The symptoms didn't really become noticeable until I was 12 and after that I became pretty much a text book PCOS case overnight.

I obviously am not a doctor but I am relating to some of the stuff you are observing in your daughters, so if you think you should get them checked out I'd say it's probably a good idea.

I have had PCOS symptoms since I was about 10. Your daughters are very lucky to have moms who are educated on this matter. My mom would dismiss every single symptom as "genetics"... a majority of my family is overweight, the girls are usually late bloomers, my mother has a little extra facial hair, etc. It wasn't until I was 18 and never got my period that someone finally picked up on it. My pediatrican is the one who actually suggested I get blood work to rule out PCOS and instead of ruling it out, it was confirmed. I'm still fighting with my gyn to start differnet meds. For the last 2.5 years BCP has been his solution. Although I get my period now, it's not solving anyother issues... especially now that I'm ttc. Me and DF are hoping things work out on their own. I stopped taking BCP in june and actually got AF on her own this month, but only time will tell. I hope for your daughter's sake that you are able to get a quick and early diagnosis! Good Luck!

steph...we have those same "genetics" in my family (paternal side). everyone is overweight...whether it's 20lbs or 150lbs and there is a history of diabetes on my maternal side. what a legacy to pass on to my kids, huh? lol

sandpiper...that's what i'm afraid of. my daughter is 9 and the extra pudge is cute but what happens when her hormones start kicking in, ya know? i don't want her to be a mess...or worse yet...be a mess and not know what's wrong with her until she's 34 (like me).

i thank you guys so much for sharing your stories. i had originally decided to wait until my girls got their periods before i talked to their doctors about the PCOS and possiblity of IR. but reading your stories, i'm going to do it now. well, not right now...when we get back from vacation (Middle of august). and if our gp doesn't know anything about it, i'll ask my ob/gyn and so on and so on.

ps...linnyloo...you did help, greatly.

thank you again!!!!

in head start I had a chest...thats pretty young but my aunt got her first extremely heavy period in 3rd grade I didn't get mine tell 4th and I was shocked my mom thought it was normal for me to bleed alot and then in 8th grade I went to see a nurse and she said I should go to a doctor because I'd use up like 3 extra long pads in 20 minutes and I'd be you know soaked ...anywho finally the spring break of 2001 I stopped getting my period it was gone and after a year I got it checked I always thought it was nothing its better to get it checked early If it wouldnt be my mom talking to planned parenthood I wouldn't have went to a doctor and thought it was normal but I was like PRAISE GOD! because I didn't have my time of the month lol right now I'm not a happy camper being on the estrogen and having the pain in the butt and I'm bleeding like I did before...I never got a call about my ultrasound though so I guess it was alright...
