Okay, does anyone else have what looks like acne on their upper arms on the outside? Is it acne and how the heck do you get rid of it? I'm thinking about using face wash, the kind with medication in it. It's not as severe as it used to be, but it's still embarracing to wear short sleeve shirts. I think it makes me look like I have a hygiene problem!

I've always had some acne on my upper arms, shoulders, and back. It's not abnormal. Anything you use on your face you can use there. The skin is thicker, so it might take longer to get results.

I too suffer from acne on my arms and am often too self-conscious to wear short sleeves or sleeveless tops. Nothing I have tried so far has completely cured my acne, but some products definitely help. Proactive makes a body wash in addition to their facial products. I tried it several years ago and it worked pretty well, but it is a bit pricey. Also, Nutragena (spelling?) makes an acne free body wash that can be found at most Pharmacies. The body washes made to fight acne might be more helpful for the arms since the skin is thicker on the arms than on the face as PBLayzod had mentioned previously.
I use to get that a lot too. Im on meds from the Dermo that has helped, but before that, i was taking Natures Cure pills that you can get in Walmart, Target or any drug store. Its like $8 a month and it works. It worked for me but my system became immune to it so I needed something stronger. Otherwise, Id use rubbing alcohol on my skin and that would help clear it up...along with tons of over the counter acne stuff.

24, known I have PCOS since i was 16, RX'd in 2006, older sister also has PCOS.
Is it acne or keratosis pilaris? KP is a condition where you get these bumps on your upper arms (usually on the backs of the arms). They are usually white or red. My friend has it really bad and her skin feels like sandpaper because of it.
I went to the derm thinking I had acne on my upper arm but he said it was KP. Now my understanding of KP is that the bumps are really close together and makes your skin feel prickly. Mine on the other hand is really spread out (actually looks like acne). I have red bumps and I can see a white head under the skin, but it doesn't swell or develop a big head like acne on my face. If I squeeze something comes out, and I do this so much that I have scars on my arms. I'm trying really hard not to do it.
The derm said that KP can only be fixed with a topical lotion, which for me worked mediocre at best. I think it's like am-lactin or something. I had to get a prescription for it and use it twice a day, which was really difficult for me because it was in the middle of the summer and I don't put lotion on twice a day in summer. The lotion didn't work for me.
What has worked for me is not picking. I have a terrible habit of picking at my arms in front of the tv or when I'm bored. That makes it a billion times worse. I don't use any anti-acne stuff on my arms but I am using Dove exfoliating bar soap, which has little blue scrubby flecks embedded in the bar. I think it works well. I rub it on my arms a few times, and I go very easy with the lotion after that. It seems to be working.
My advice would be if you're a chronic picker then knock it off because that makes it a lot worse. Hope this helps.
I can't remember what it is that I have, but my dad has it, I have it, and one of my little brothers has it as well. The doc said it is hereditary, but like I said, I can't remember what it's called. It doesn't really bother me that much, except in the summertime. I do keep lotion on it though, otherwise it gets really dry and itches.
I have it on my arms, shoulders and back. It doesn't seem as bad in the summer when I get some sun on it as it does in the winter. Nothing has helped! I have even had a special medicine mixed just for me and it didn't do anything except dry out my skin horribly! It was awefull.
