did i just make a huge mistake by waxing my lip??? i never waxed it before only bleached.....i just got it done and now i changed my mind...my lip looks funny without the hair...the pores are real big, it hurts really bad...will prob be red for days....i bet people who know me will be able to see i got my lip waxed....is it gonna grow back black and stubbly??
I love the way it feels after I wax mine. I actually have my whole face done and love it. I feel much more confident when the hair is gone...it is still there and can still be seen when I bleach it.

It won't grow back stubbly because the hair was taken out by the root where as with shaving you are just cutting it at the point where the hair is the thickest. It will grow back just like a normal hair and like the other cyster said it will probably be thinner. The redness shouldn't last more than a day. If you have trouble with acne (like I do) I suggest treating the area with some kind of acne treatment. I use an acne fighting cream and it helps keep it to a minimum.

In the beginning, you will have to get it done more often as the hairs are in different stages of growth but soon you shouldn't have to get it done more than every few weeks. Right now, I can't afford to get mine waxed professionally so I'm using nair. It doesn't work that well on corse hair like mine but it does a good enough job for now.

Excellent advice. I waxed my top lip months ago but the spots that came after it put me off ever doing it again. Couldn't decide what looked worse, the moustache or the spots. So went back to shaving it.
Something so simple which I had never thought of ... thanks, I will try this
ditto on the preventive acne treatment...it makes a huge difference for me.
when i first began waxing my upper lip, 4 weeks between waxings was a huge stretch (but that was all i could afford). the hairs have grown back in finer, and my root ball (i don't recall the real name for it) is smaller making the actual act of waxing easier now.
right now i'm going 5 weeks between waxings...and i think i could stretch it to 6, but my eyebrows would never make it without serious plucking intervention.
I also get my whole face waxed - it feels so great! It's a bit sensitive afterward, but if you put some baby oil on it, the redness only lasts a couple of hours.
It's smooth, and the hairs don't start growing back for at least 3 days (except my chin - probably a bit sooner).
i get my upper lip hairs removed through electrolysis. it's a bit expensive at around $18 CDN per 15 min treatment but it's worth it. i go every three weeks and now, i'm finding that i can even wait a full month between each treatment. the hairs are growing back finer and less as well.
One word of caution about electrolysis. I had it done by someone who used too high of heat. I really trusted her because I had gone to her years ago, didn't go for a while, then started up again. The second time around I thought maybe I was just more sensitive because it really hurt. I would have tears running down my face. Now I know it really hurt because she didn't have the settings right. I now have hyperpigmentation on one side of my upper lip, which means that the area is darker. So, after paying hundreds of dollars to try to make the area look hair free, I now look like I have a 5 o'clock shadow on my upper lip. And, I still have to wax!!
I cover up the hyperpigmentation the best I can every day with makeup. I use a prescription skin bleaching cream that keeps it under control, but it takes several weeks to lighten the area to match the surrounding skin. However, I can't expose the area to the sun even for a few minutes because it darkens right up and all that work bleaching it is destroyed.
I asked my derm about whether the electrolysis caused it and she said no. She also had no interest in my hair loss and told me basically to accept it and that her nurse had really thin hair and didn't let it bother HER, so, needless to say, I didn't value her opinion. I know without a doubt the electrolysis caused the pigmentation because the darkness is right where I had it done and where it remained red for weeks before turning dark. It's been almost three years and it's still there! So...if you do electrolysis, make them stop if it really hurts because they may be doing damage.
Anyway, regarding the waxing, I have waxed my upper lip for years. I do it myself. I have to be careful not to cause any extra trauma to my upper lip that would increase the hyperpigmentation and if you wax yourself, you can control the temperature and how the wax is pulled off. Waxing yourself is so easy and totally cheap. Just takes a little practice but it's worth it because you can then do it anytime you want. I also wax my bikini area myself. You can get microwaveable wax. The hair on my upper lip is very fine, so I only have to wax it about once a month and I pluck any noticeable hairs in between. After I wax it, I use ice immediately to cool down the area. Then, I keep a tub of Noxzema cream in the fridge and put it on my upper lip to keep the area cool and soothe it. I run around the house with a white mustache from the Noxzema and just let it soak in. I reapply it as needed. Within a few hours, the redness is significantly decreased if not gone altogether. It might flare up when you shower the next morning, so don't use really hot water on your face for a day or two. Also, I like to coat my upper lip with a little aloe vera gel or neosporin when I go to bed the first night I wax it, just to help with the healing process.
I have waxing down to a science now. It's so easy!! I also do my chin occasionally and my eyebrows.
I had the same experience that Ah had with Electrolysis. It worked really well for stray hairs on my chin and neck, but it left me with the dark moustache look, also. I have a different theory about why though. I had done electrolysis forever with no probs, but then the "moustache" dark skin incident happened while I was PG so it could be hormone related and it has been fading ever since.
