Ever since I hit puberty back when I was 13...I've had irregular periods. My mom thought I would grow out of it. That it was normal for teens. So did I. I would get my period every few months. And then I would have it a month or two. usually it would be REALLY REALLY heavy. Then I wouldn't get it for a loong loong time.
Also, when I hit puberty I gained A LOT of weight about 50 extra pounds..and I was of normal weight. I didn't change my eating habits at all.
ANyway, when I was 16 or so I saw a show on Maury about these women who had irrregular periods...so I watched it. And I was crying the entire time. Everything they were saying....all the syptoms..I had. My mom came out and asked me what was wrong. I told her. then seh started to worry. But, she said she'd wait to take me to the doctor..because...she felt I would grow out of it.
Then, a few months later she started hearing more and more about this...and I was having mostly all of the symptoms she was reading about. SO, she took me to the doctor....
They thought a maybe it was a thyroid (sp?) problem. SO I was given a test. It wasn't. So, they were really worried and schedule me an appointment with a gyno to determine if POS was what I had.......
I got scared. I was young......and nervous. I begged my mom not to make me go. SO, i didn't.
And, now I'm at the point where I have to go. I am too worried about myself. I get really bad cramps every once in a while..and i haven't had a period for almost a year... and i use to get it every few months. Sometimes every 6 or 9. I was convinced I would grow out of this..but..i haven't and the more and more I read about this, the more scared I get.
Our hospital is doing a study for women with irregular periods and have this disease........ and I'm just worried.....
This is my first day here..so....i just wanted to get some input back. I am soo upset. This is really scary for me. I just need some support...
I am going to be going in...i have to call back and let them know...
what kind of things will i be going through........
I posted to you on another thread. I can see you are upset and need a little more information. PCOS can be frustrating (just read the posts here and you can get an idea about that). However, if you are diagnosed with PCOS, you are taking some great steps to educate yourself (1. by joining this site, and 2. by joining a study group). There are many more options for women diagnosed (dx) with PCOS, compared to when I was first dx.
I was 18 (it was 1980). I stopped having periods (which weren't very regular anyway). I had a dr. right out of med school who decided to do a sonogram (ultrasound) to see if my ovaries were okay. My sonogram was a painless, non-invasive test. I just had to drink a TON of water and hold it so that my full bladder would push my ovaries and uterus closer to the surface in order for the ultrasound to "see" them. Now you don't even have to go through the discomfort of a full bladder. New ultrasound techniques work much better.
My sonogram showed the typical "pearl necklace" of cysts ringing my ovaries. Also my right ovary was greatly enlarged. Back then, there wasn't much they could do for me. The dr. gave me provera to start my period, then put me on birth control pills to regulate my periods and to make sure I menstruated every month. ****THIS IS IMPORTANT**** I noticed that you wrote that you haven't had a period in a year. Although it is nice to not have to worry about the mess and all that, you do need to shed your endometrium each month. Otherwise your uterus can harden, and you have an increased risk of uterine cancer.
Later in my life, when I was 25, my husband and I wanted to have a baby. At that time, when I didn't conceive, I had a laporoscopy -- a very simple "exploratory" surgical procedure. I was asleep and felt no pain. The doctor who performed that procedure also confirmed my PCOS.
More than likely, you will have an ultrasound and maybe some blood tests.
Thanks for the reply!! Oh, geeze. Now that worries me.... yeah I haven't had one in almost a year. That's why I'm finally going to the doctors..... plus I just started getting really bad pains in my side. Oh they are unbearable sometimes and I can't do anything but lay down..... it's like sharp pains on the the sides of my stomach near my hips...oh they hurt soo bad... and then sometimes it's fine..and then all of a sudden they come... it's terrible....
good luck hope it all goes well and you get rid of those horrible pains. until I went on medicine i felt these most horrible pains and then 1 night my bleed went crazy I went through over 10 pads. so if your treated then youll be alright
