Hi Canadian cysters. I am hoping to be a Canandian cyster some day. Well, I'd like to be a Canadian without the cyster attached! Anyway, my husband and I are looking into moving to the Vancouver area from the US (Florida) in the near future. I was hoping someone could tell me about living there. We visited and loved it. How is health care? school systems? crime? quality of life? etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Amy
Well I've never lived in Vancouver myself...but I have been there. Beautiful city, especially in the summer time.
Hopefully someone who lives there can give you some insight..until them maybe these links will help you:
Health Care in BC is the same as most of Canada. You apply for it, they will issue you a card (CareCard). You pay a monthly premium which is:
$54 for one person
$96 for a family of two
$108 for a family of three or more
And that's it. Whenever you go to the hospital or doctor, they will ask for your card. You do not pay for your visits or procedures. You do pay for your own medication (and there are drug coverage plans that you can get to help you with that) and you pay for certain procedures that are deemed cosmetic or not needed. But most medical visits are covered under the health care premium.

No problem..if you have any other questions, feel free to ask and we'll try and answer them!
Most people find our health care a little funny and odd to understand hehe...but it really is nice to not have to worry about paying every time to go to the doctor

Amy,
If you are moving from Florida think long and hard about what sunshine means to you...
Vancouver is like Seattle - rain rain drizzly rain. I moved here 3 years ago when I married a guy from here, and although he doesn't mind it, it is HARD for me to handle the dreary winters (and springs and falls...). Summer is nice. Mountains are pretty. Drizzle most all of the time...

hi!
I agree that it depends on how far from the city you want to be/ what kind of area you like. I just bought a condo in port moody and like it a lot.
Certain suburbs are known more for crime but the stereo types might be wrong. someone already mentioned mls.ca, great site. renting.ca is good if you're renting (i think that's the site).
thanks for all the info. We're not moving for a little while but all the info I can get helps. My parents aren't too happy about us moving there, they lived their entire lives in Philly PA. My husband and I are much more adventuresome and figure if we aren't happy we can always move. Anything is better than the horrible hurricanes of south florida.
Depending on what you are looking for. . . Victoria is also BEAUTIFUL!! LOL! Thought I'd give it a wee push too!
Low crime, lower property prices than Van and a fantastic fertility clinic.
