I am very new to this board. i just found it Yesterday. I am so excited to find a support group. I was diagnosed in 1999 with PCOS, and in Oct 2001 i was blessed with a beautiful daughter.
The biggest problem I have with PCOS is the unwanted hair!!! It is such a cause for embarrasment. So I was interested to see what everyone else was using. I too have tried all of the shaving, plucking, waxing, electolysis, etc... My doctor finally prescribed a cream to me that is amazing! It is called Vaniqa and is only available through prescription. It is fairly new. It is white, odorless and painless. You put it on effected areas 2x a day. My problem areas are neck (awfull THICK/COARSE hair), sideburns, and mustache. I started using the cream and didn't see a change right at first, but after a month it had completely reduced the amount of hair growing, and by the end of 2 months almost ALL of the hair was gone. Every now and then I had to pluck a hair that popped up, but nothing bad at all. Now I only aplly the cream once a day. I am thinking about trying to reduce it to every other day. But thats whats nice is I just apply it to maintain.
I am also going to try it on my inner thighs/bikini area. The only problem is that it is quite costly ($50 a tube with my insurance). At first I went through a tube every month, but now that i apply less I would say a tube lasts about 3 months. Honestly, this stuff is great, and I was excited to share with all of you. If you have any questions please ask me!

glad to hear the Vaniqua is working for you. I have read about it, but there were so many other things going on with me that I forgot to ask my doc about it. I will definitely beg her for a prescription next time - I don't care much it is. I want this hair GONE! It is the worst, and I think it accounts for the majority of my feelings of insecurity and awkwardness when I'm in the presence of others. I want my old face back.
I am also taking Metformin and hear that it has reduced facial hair for a lot of cysters, but it also takes quite a long time. Maybe meanwhile I could apply the Vaniqua (if I get it, that is) and start feeling like a real woman again.
Thanks for sharing this with us. See you around the boards.

I've been using Vaniqa since last May and been on met since last June and have seen no change in my hair growth. Once I use up the last of the Vaniqa, I'm not using again. It is expensive. I'm hoping when I see the endo in June they will put me on something else for the hair.
I used Vaniqa and broke out worse than I ever have before or since. It was also way to expensive and then add in the rest of my meds.

I have been using Vaniqa for about a year on my face. I use to have to shave my face daily, the hair is now gone. However, I tried it on my bikini line and while it slowed the growth a bit, it wasn't a satisfactory reduction and not worth the $40 every 3 weeks. Now I am having laser hair removal done in this area. I've also been taking 100mg of spironolactone for about 5 years.
It's nice to be able to benefit from the latest technologies on hair removal and reduction. I have less hair now than ever before
I tried Vaniqa also. It was a tad expensive at $47 for a very small tube and it slowed the hair growth down. I used it while I was in the hospital when I had my left ovary removed.
I've been using Vaniqua for about 3 months, and havent seen a difference. I tweeze my stache, and my chin and under neck is white now, but not reduced. I shave twice a day if I'm going out at night. BTW, I get mine at Walmart, and it's less than $39 without insurance. I also take Met, and have done lasering, which helped the most of all the other choices. Oddly enough, it didn't touch my upper lip. even though it was done at least 10 times. Nothing is guaranteed.
I tried it when it first came out about a year ago. I used it for about 3 months and didn't really see that much of a difference to warrant spending $50 a month on it. And that was without insurance because mine won't pay for it. Well at least it worked for someone.
Vaniqa was the first thing I was prescribedfor the hair last year, and it didn't do anything for me. I have the sideburns, chin, upper lip, and neck, andif anything, the neck seemed to get worse. I;m on spironolactone now, for a month, (trial) will be talking to gyno next month at followup.
But im glad its helped you! Always nice to know its not a waste for everyone

Rx- desagen, spironolactone
i, too, have had GREAT results with using Vaniqa. the only problem is sometimes i just forget to put it on. i also thread my moustache anytime i'm in Houston then i go back to using the vaniqa religiously. and it has slowed the hair growth tremendously!
I have been on Vaniqua for 2 months and I can for sure say I see i a difference .. I am also on Spiro but only 50mg/day .... but I can tell a difference on my chin - My tube was $60 (no ins) and its still half full after 2 months .. so when you break it down its not that expensive. I often only use it once a day ... i forget the second app. just thought I'd share
